Christopher Nolan did it again. If you’re looking for a movie that’s smart, cleverly-done, will make you think and blow your mind, watch Interstellar. The incredible film starred Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, John Lithgow and Mackenzie Foy. The film is a brainchild of the Nolan brothers – Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. They co-wrote the final script based on an original script Jonathan wrote in 2007. The film is inspired by Kip Thorne who is a theoretical physicist who eventually became the film consultant. The film is a box-office success, grossing $621.8 million.
Interstellar is a story about a crew of astronauts who traveled through a wormhole in attempt to save the human race and search for a new home. It’s science fiction as its finest and one that attracted both enthusiasts and critics. Aside from the thought-provoking plot and incredible acting of the stars, Interstellar also provides another “character.” This is its stunning graphics. The imagery and visual effects of the film are nothing short of extraordinary.
The same visual effects makers who worked with Nolan in his other magnificent masterpiece, Inception, created the visuals for Interstellar. But unlike Inception and yet another Nolan chef-d’oeuvre, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar’s visual effects were created first. This was deliberately done so the actors can do their scenes with digital projector displays, rather than the notorious green screens.
And just like in any sci-fi story, the spacecraft is another character of the story. In this movie, there are three: the Ranger which is akin to a space shuttle, the Endurance which is the mother ship, and the Lander which is a transportation vessel that is like “a heavy Russian helicopter.” All of the spacecraft and other visual designs in the movie are products of a real mish-mash of digital and analog technology. The Ranger, Endurance and Lander are made using miniature effects. The visual effects company didn’t exclusively use computer-generated imagery but a combination of 3D printing, hand sculpting, scale models, now known as the “maxatures,” and camera effects.
Because of these visuals and imagery, as well as it being a sci-fi movie, it’s not a wonder why a lot of designers use the movie as a muse to create jaw-dropping Interstellar movie posters.
