What do you get when you mix a fashion photographer, and a master of animation? If you said beautiful gifs, then you are 110% correct! Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg have teamed up to bring us beautiful animated photographs, a.k.a Cinemagraph. These Cinemagraphs are more than a picture, but not quite a video. Their main goal is to visually illustrate a short story. To give you a comparison, think of the magical newspaper from the movie Harry Potter.

Now you are probably scratching your head and thinking how in the word are these different from a GIF(Graphics Interchange Format)? An animated .gif is usually a sequence of stills pulled from a video, combined together and repurposed into a .gif. Cinemagraphs are different because Jamie and Kevin use a single photograph while adding a living moment within it. The process takes many hours of manual editing. If you wish to know how it’s done, check out the following articles:

These gifs have been attracting attention like crazy in the last few weeks, we respect this art form and would love to share it with the world! Today we have collected some of the best gifs that Jamie and Kevin have created! For more inspiration visit Jamie’s Tumblog

  1. These are simply amazing. Some of them are a bit creepy like the eyes that randomly move. Fantastic job. Very impressed.

  2. Those are awesome!

  3. like when your about to take a picture.. you do, but it doesnt turn out right and you realize that your eyes just do it better.

^^ these are what the eyes do, to evoke feeling by registering minute details that are hard to capture in stills. LOVEEE

  4. These are very nice indeed and have given me a few ideas of my own but I have to say that this is by far nothing new. Techniques like these have been used flash websites for years. They have principles routed in lythographic animation and have been used in splash screens on games for the last 2 decades. So to just give a new name doesn’t make them original from a technical perspective but they are conceptually very nice and very well executed.

  5. First , have not noticed any anymation , then were thinking what is all about ?!?Then suddenly …..woaw ..its moving ….great !

  6. Wow – so beautiful. Some bring such a feeling of love and contentedness, and some are actually quite haunting. Interestingly, they elicit feelings that a video of the same length and subject matter couldn’t do. Love them.

  7. Beautiful. Strangely un-nerving, some of them.

  8. LOVE IT…Captivating!…I want to surround myself in these kinds of pictures/cinemagraphs!

  9. I don’t get why the last one is there, but I adore the rest.

  10. these are amazing! i <3 them!

  11. lol i kept waiting for the brownie batter to fill up the rest of the pan! .. haha im dumbb. Last picture was the best by far though aha 🙂

  12. So beautiful. So, so beautiful.

  13. I am very curious as to how these are done, any tutorials or suggestions?

  14. I can imagine the commentary in the hair product one.

    “Okaayyy, so we today we’ll use just a liiiitttle hair product…little more…little more…just a little more…still not quite enough…almost there…still missing a few spots….” XP

  15. These are beautiful. I never cease to me amazed at the creativity and imagination that people have. I love the isolated motion. It really helps me appreciate the miracle of movement.

  16. These pictures are just so cool. Loving them

  17. The new Donna Hay magazine app uses this in stunning fashion throughout the emag…it’s completely captivating.

  18. Love the short animations.

  19. For fans of these, I suggest you check out this site there are tons of great ones on there (they say they’re gif’s on there, but I persoanlly don’t know the difference, oops)

  20. In fact, ‘The shining’ one is from that site!

The way that only certain elements in each cinemagraph were selected to be moving, they force your eye to focus on those few things. It’s like in poetry when a few words are repeated over and over throughout the poem, or in music when a chorus is repeated. LOVE it!

  22. this is Harry Potter papernews? xD

  23. 15 Examples of gorgeous cinemagraphs and not one of them is based on Kubrick:

  24. These are just stunning, feeling inspired we made our own here:

What do you think? Has any one found a commercial use for these?

  25. Hello!
I just made my own gif. but I can’t figure out how to upload it to anything and my computer won’t play it when I open it. The only thing that works is when I save it as a html but then I can’t upload that to any website. I was wondering how you uploaded these gifs on here? Thanks!

  26. Yeah, cinemagraphs are definitely on the up, Beck & Burg did a great job (re)introducing them and adding a contemporary twist to photos..
In fact some of us have been inspired to start a collection of our own over at ..
