According to several records, there are almost 100 million .com domain names registered. However, given the around 60,000 of these expire every day, it’s obvious that most of them are worthless. While the chances of you finding a domain name that is going to make you rich overnight are pretty slim, you can still make a fair amount of money from domain names in various different ways.

Parking

Parking a domain name usually involves pointing your domain name to an automatically generated page which contains links to sites which may be relevant to your domain name. Whenever a visitor clicks on one of these links, you get paid a percentage of the revenue which is generated. While this will only usually be a few pence per click, if you have enough traffic, tis can soon add up to a reasonable amount.

Mini Site

Rather than relying on an automatically generated page, you could build the site out as a mini site. The site can then be monetised in a variety of ways, including Adsense and affiliate marketing. As you control the site, you can optimise the content in order to increase the amount of traffic the site gets, however the content on these sites is normally low quality and the sites are designed to encourage users to leave your website through a paid link.

Develop The Domain

Taking the mini site one step further, you could develop the domain into a high quality authority site. By creating a high quality site and performing some basic online marketing, you can create a site which has some real value, rather than just a side which is designed to encourage your users to click on an advert and leave your website. The domain could then be sold on to the new owner, along with the existing website.

Reselling

Reselling domain names is often one of the most rewarding methods as it often has a large, instant payout for very little work. There are two main ways of reselling a domain. The first way is to sell the domain to another domainer and leave them to think about how they can make money from it. This usually means taking less than the domain may be worth, so that the reseller can eventually make a profit on it somehow.

The second way of selling a domain is to sell it to an end user, ie someone who will use the domain name for their own website. This type of buyer will often pay a premium to secure the domain. For more useful articles don’t forget to subscribe to the RSS-feed and follow Inspirationfeed on TwitterFacebook! 1. Domain flipping can be a good business to get into, and even more money can be made when you flip an entire site. the benfit to buying and then selling domains only is the barrier to entry is small. It costs less that $10 to buy a domain to get started in domain flipping. Though the costs or time associated with building an entire site to flip are more, the payoff is also much more.

  2. Parking revenue has continued to decline over the last few years. Your best bet is to either flip the domain or develop it.

  3. Hi Adam,

You are right, the potential revenue from parking has dropped quite a lot which is why it was the first in the list. Its quick and easy, takes a few seconds, but isnt going to make you as much as the others. Obviously developing the site is going to make you a lot more, but also require a lot more time and financial investment.
