Being a web designer is more than just coding. You have to be able to understand the internet, people, and design all at once. Although most web designers are taught this, many forget how to be an excellent and successful web designer after months or years of being able to work predominately alone and unbothered.

If you are noticing a decline in business or just aren’t feeling very enamored with the work you are producing, you may be missing out on some key elements of successful web design. A few things every web designer needs to be able to do in order to be successful include:

1. Know Their Audience

It takes more than passing out a paid survey or two to adequately know what people want, and if you don’t pay attention to design trends and other wants, you won’t be designing sites that interest internet users. When you write for a client, make sure that you completely understand the company’s target market. If you are having a little trouble understanding who the target market is, don’t be afraid to research the demographic online. Doing so will give you a better understanding of who the site needs to be designed for which will ultimately help you design better sites.

2. Clean Coding and SEO

If you aren’t making sites that are SEO friendly, then you might as well quit being a web designer. In addition to paying attention to titles and metatags, you needs to makes sure that the linking structure is smooth and that the flat site architecture is streamlined.

3. Make a Site Mobile Friendly

Smartphones are becoming a widely used gadget for those interested in researching information online. If you are designing sites that won’t pull up on smartphone browsers, you can guarantee that you will lose business. Make sure that all sites you create are mobile friendly as it will not only boost SEO, but it will also help gain the client business.

4. Find Great Media

Websites have long moved past great pictures. Clients want everything from great pictures to song to video, and you better be able to find each of these types of media and be able to incorporate them into your sites effectively. You need to make sure that the types of media used are not only catchy, but can also be uploaded quickly on various platforms to get the best site usage.

5. Test

Companies don’t release products without running them through the gauntlet of testing, and you should do the same. Before launching any website, use visual heat mapping to test your site’s design and check out your actions points. Also be sure to use analytics programs. You want to make sure that your site operates as smoothly as possible.

Designing websites has definitely evolved from the original one page interface. Web designers must keep SEO and social media streams in mind if they wish to create exceptional sites and remain successful while also becoming better coders and better judges of trends. Staying on top in an industry dominated by up-and-coming stars isn’t always easy, but with the right education and know how, any web designer can expect a lasting and highly lucrative career.
