When you think of the worlds’ biggest companies their logos speak for themselves. McDonalds, Apple and Nike are all instantly recognisable by their simple but effective logos. Whatever the size of your business, you need a logo that speaks volumes about you.
So, what’s the secret behind a great logo? What have these companies got right? And how can you make sure your logo works just as well? Here are five insider secrets behind great logo design:
Image
All the great logos we see on a daily basis have mastered the use of images. Whether it’s the Apple apple, or the Nike swoosh; these pictures really do speak 1,000 words. A great logo uses images to make a statement and an impact.
A unique image or picture can bring your logo to life. The best image logos are recognisable at a glance, and can be instantly associated with your business or brand. Whatever image or images you use, make sure they are relevant to your company.
Color
When designing a logo for your business, you need to decide on a colour scheme. This should be something that is consistent with your brand identity and easily replicated across all of your marketing materials and website.
You can either go for bold, eye-catching colors or choose for an understated monotone logo. Work in close partnership with your graphic design agency to decide what combination best conveys your business’s ethics.
Strapline
A good logo becomes a great logo when accompanied by a witty and unforgettable strap line. Whether it uses alliteration, rhyme or an industry in-sight, a strap-line is a great way to grab the attention of your customers.
As with a good logo design, the strapline should say something about you and your business. Make sure your strap line reflects your company’s principles and remains true to you. This should be something you as a business come up with in order to add the personal touch.
Simplicity
When designing a brand new logo for your business, you should keep it simple. While a complicated and intricate design will grab attention, it won’t always be clear what message you’re conveying. Think of the biggest logos around and how simple they are.
A simple logo design can incorporate colour, images and a strap line while still creating a visual impact. Sometimes, especially in logo design, less really is more. Consider the use of white and negative space to make you stand out from the crowd.
Usability
Your logo will be used across a whole host of marketing materials – from business cards and flyers, to your website and social media pages. As your logo will be seen by hundreds of people in a variety of locations, it needs to pack the same punch everywhere.
It needs to work small as a profile image on Twitter and as a large vehicle wrap. This is where you can play around with color, text and images to discover what works – and more importantly, what doesn’t.
A great logo can work wonders in your marketing strategy. An innovative and eye catching brand identity will set you apart from your competitors and show your clients exactly what you’re about. Creative logos can bring your company to life.
