Review: DesignContest.com Not Your Typical Crowdsourcing Site

Economic downfalls in the last decade saw a huge increase in the need for high quality graphic design at affordable prices. Crowdsourcing and spec design has quickly become the design industry’s answer to clients’ need for creative design coupled with a fear of unnecessary spending. With crowdsourcing, a client will describe his needs, hundreds of designers will provide concepts, and the client chooses, and only pays for, the one he likes best.

Sounds great for the client – however, design crowdsourcing has been viewed by professional designers as a threat to the design industry. In an age where nearly 75% of Americans are using a personal computer and quickly learning to create basic graphic design, it seems everyone and their cousin is a novice designer these days – before DesignContest.com, these were the individuals providing the spec work to typical crowdsourcing sites.

DesignContest does things a little differently, and the unique functions and features of their site address the concerns of both designers wanting to keep the industry professional and clients looking for high quality design at a price they can afford.

What Makes DesignContest Better?

The best, most qualified professional designers in the world.

Professional designers know that just having a computer and some design software does not a designer make. Your clients rely on you to provide well-designed, high quality graphics, in a format that they can actually use. Designers are expected to be knowledgeable in their field, beyond just making pretty pictures. At DesignContest, any designer wishing to compete in professional design contests is pre-screened for an understanding of design basics – including file types, copyright laws, and design ethics.

Solid, continuing relationships.

A common issue with other crowdsourcing sites is that once a client has found the right designer that meets their needs and matches their aesthetic, they can’t work with them directly for future design projects. At DesignContest.com, many clients run a contest for their logo design and then work exclusively with their winning design for future projects using the One-on-One Projects feature. One-on-One Projects are still handled through the website, offering security for both client and designer, but provide a unique opportunity to work with an individual instead of a contest setting.

Guaranteed satisfaction for both clients and designers.

All professional design contests at DesignContest.com are pre-paid by the clients, meaning that at the contest end, a winning designer will be paid. Anyone that’s participated in other crowdsourcing sites has, no doubt, seen a contest abandoned with no winner selected or paid, and no recourse for the designers that put their efforts into the contest. Or worse, sent winning design files to a client, never to be paid. DesignContest collects payment from clients before the first design is created, meaning a designer will be paid each time. But, they also offer a money-back guarantee for the client – as long as the client has been an active participant in their contest, provided feedback to designers and made a strong effort to get the right design, they have peace of mind knowing their money won’t be wasted. The result is a motivated and involved client and happy designers.

But that’s not all…

While design crowdsourcing may not be for everyone, DesignContest.com provides a unique opportunity for designers to work with clients around the world, gain experience and harness their skills, earn money, and build upon their portfolios – all without the same risks found on other sites. And, offers clients unparalleled access to tens of thousands of qualified designers with the assurance of knowing they’ll get a design they love and establish a working relationship with the designer of their choice.

I am about to test this guarantee. Crowdsourcing a design is interesting to a certain point. It seems that on my contest people mostly posted drafts. Each time I said a design was interesting but needs work, further editions involved minimal corrections. Not the kind of overhaul you’d expect from a designer working with you.
It seems the contestants are trying to minimize their risks by minimizing the time spent with you. Your mileage may vary of course. This was my personal experience at a given time. I had the highest paid contest for a few days, and suddenly a guy puts 2000$ on his contest. That was way out of my ball park, and designers all went to bet on this one! I hope that you won’t have this kind of competition when you do your contests.

Any true professional in any field will not begin work on a project without a price agreement and a deposit in-hand. Graphic designers are contract workers… what you get at crowdsourcing sites are desperate amateurs who lack the experience and portfolios to compete in the professional marketplace. Students, newbies, wannabes, low-ballers, etc. I seriously doubt if anyone who goes to a site like that for a logo will agree to do what they are asking these designers to do… work for free in the slim hope that a payment will come. Try going to several restaurants and ordering meals from each, but only PAYING for the one you like best. It’s bad business. The effect on skilled professionals in the field is that their work is now devalued overall. I would discourage anyone from using these contests of mediocrity.

We held 3 design contests on designcontest.com. The last one is our corporate website. We started the contest in November 2011 and today is 1/30 and we still have nothing. the owner lady seems to be on top of everything until you pay for the services, then she likes to give speeches on how complicated the procedure is…The designers are great so good actually that we searched for our designer on the internet and found him on odesk and hired him AGAIN so he could finish the image for us. In the meantime, designcontest.com lady keeps snowballing us. the coding of our drupal theme is taking now more than 1 month for a one day job. the problem is that she is so greedy she wont let you contact your designer and/or coder directly (if she has any – we highly suspect she has no coders on staff). so if you have about 1-2 years to spare to get your new website online, go ahead use designcontest.com

Jen, I’m sorry to see that you experiencing issues with your website. DesignContest is the great option to get any custom graphic design done affordably, with highest quality and in short time frame. Please note that this is covering only the graphics part. Then you requested the implementation into Drupal template with additional functionality. We have suggested our partner to do the coding for you. The timeframe on coding strictly depends on the functional requirements of your website and can be complicated which takes alot longer to develop than just a single page wordpress.

With all do respect, DesignContest has fulfilled all your needs to deliver beautiful website design.
