Finding Hope In Your life when you’re depressed or Feel Defeated

How many times have you asked yourself the question, “Am I happy?”? And if the answer to that is ‘No’, then you should be reading this article.

As the days pass by and the going gets tough, we tend to ponder over the things that we have and haven’t done, the choices we made and the ones we did not. Some of us took to the beaten path, took the comfortable way out and led the dream life. Others wandered down the unknown path, where life took them.

Sooner or later however, life is bound to have burdened you with expectations. And the thing about expectations, you can never live up to them. With the world orbiting faster than ever, 24 hours might seem too less. And if this makes you depressed, we have a few ways in which you can tackle it.

Learn New Stuff

One thing about depression is that it hates change. So do the thing that your depression hates. Read a new book, join a new club, go dancing, learn acting or playing the guitar. You will find that it is a welcome change. When you find that life has given up hope and nothing is going your way, this will motivate you and you will also make some new friends!

Absorb Positive Energy

Tackle the negative energy of depression with optimism. Join a yoga class, give in to spirituality, take counseling sessions or go for color therapy. When something’s bothering you, talking about it to a mental health professional can provide you with a much needed perspective. Spirituality and color therapy channelize the positive energy of the cosmos towards you while meditation enables you to focus and get rid of your inner negativity.

Write about your Feelings

Depression does not happen in a day. It’s the continuous struggle, the daily running to win a rat race that triggers it. At this point writing about what you feel and why you feel depressed can be an enormous help. I have personally found this soothing. As soon as you put ink to paper, you will have a clear sense of things. Also getting them out of your system helps radically.

Chart the Graph

Yes you heard it right. Chart your own growth. If you feel bad for not having a bigger house or a bigger car or plain lack of happiness, trace your growth rate. Make a note of the important events in your life in the past ten years. Then predict what the next event could be. Plot for it. But remember, one of the trigger events of depression is unrealistic expectations.

Whatever you desire, it should be real. Keep it simple, silly. Take small baby steps. You will learn to enjoy the journey.

It’s OK to suck

There I said it! Most of us go through life waiting to hear this from someone. But right from parents to bosses, everyone expects you to be Iron Man. Well you are a human being and guess what, it’s fun to suck! Remember the time in school when you sucked at Math? Or the time in college where you sucked at dancing?

Did that stop you from enjoying life? And here’s the secret; nobody’s perfect. They are just afraid to own up to their weaknesses. Everybody admits to their strengths, never their weaknesses. And the moment you embrace your weakness, my friend, will be the time when you realize your true potential.

Everybody-goes-through-that

Also, if you try and really try, may be you will better your weakness. Steve Jobs did not become successful in one day. Neither did Bill Gates. They ran, fell down, got up and ran again. It’s your race; don’t let anybody else judge it. Which brings me to my next point.

Adrenaline Rush

Is there something you are afraid of? Something you have been putting off for a long while? Well, DO IT. It can be cliff hanging or swimming. Of course I don’t want you to be reckless. But do stuff that gets your health hormones pumping. Eat well, walk in the morning, even travel. Remember Julia Roberts in Eat,Pray,Love?

Sometimes a moment away from the hustle can be a gift. It will provide you with solitude and serenity essential to have a fresh perspective. So pack up those bags and get set for a cross-country hike!

Volunteer Groups

Joining a social organization can also help you. Talking to survivors of depression can provide you with comfort and mental strength. There are many support groups which can help you in this regard. You can also volunteer at an NGO and spend time with the less fortunate people. Being with them will help you realize how fortunate you are and you will be able to see the bigger picture.

The Other Side

What-would-you-do

For every negative thing that happens in your life, there is always a silver lining. What’s your sunny side? Always remember, there is a moon to every night, rain to every storm and Christmas to every winter. If you do this, and imbibe it into your daily routine, you will find that you will not only be able to tackle your depression but also be an inspiration to others. Again, the key to success is perseverance.

These are some of my pointers for tackling depression. Be positive. Life is an adventure and at the end, it is all about the journey, is it not? Enjoy it. Love it. Live it. And never consider yourself lonely. Remember if we are all alone, then we are together in that too.

Life is like a piano, you need both the white and black notes to create a “melody”

this is retarded… the only way to get over depression is to find something better than the thing your depressed about.
for example if its failing a test… get a better grade on another subject
if its a break up … get a better girlfriend.
remember it helps to get over a bitch… when you find a real woman
