Getting the motivation to get up and do something that you know needs to be taken care of is always easier said than done. Finding the courage can be very hard, but isn’t impossible.

What motivates you to go work in the morning, or get to the ever-growing pile of laundry? As corny as it sounds, finding a theme to your life might help. Call it a mantra, and decide what you need to tell yourself when you need to get to work and break your motivational funk.

My mother always used to say, “I’m happy, I’m healthy, and I’m ready.” Come up with something of your own, it could help you break the cycle of deflating motivation.

Next, do some self-reflection about how you live your life. Are you a morning person or a night owl? This could help you decide when you need to plan your biggest tasks. Look very closely at your day to day life and figure out what you can get rid off.

Sometimes it’s hard to motivate yourself, and come up with a way to get off your butt, but it is never impossible to create a need to get things done by yourself. When you ride on an airplane, you’re always told to give yourself an oxygen mask before helping children and the elderly. This is because the only way you’re going to be able to think clearly is if you take care of your needs first.

This principle can be related to motivation as well, by making sure you make yourself happy before you get to work. It’s easy, just do something you really enjoy, then go through your to-do list. It’s been said that the best way to get things done is by making sure that you are getting active.

As strange as it may seem, working out every day is actually a way to gain energy. If you’ve never been in a slump, you know that going for a walk will help you to get on your to-do list faster than anything else. Living an active lifestyle is recommended for several reasons, the healthier you are, the better you feel.

Thinking about the possibilities of tomorrow is a great way to get back in gear. Try to realize that each major goal in your life is separated by several smaller goals. These goals can be hard to obtain, but aren’t impossible. Remember to take one step at a time, and to not bite off more than you can chew.

Try to create a list of easily obtainable goals and then do them in oder. You can do this daily. For example, write down all of the things you wish to accomplish today:

  • Take a shower.
  • Wash the dishes.
  • Take out the trash.
  • Schedule an appointment.
  • Call ____.
  • Change your oil.
  • Fix a ballin dinner.

As you complete each task, be sure to cross it off the list. Once you’ve practiced this a few times, it will become a habit. It’s kind of like playing real life role-playing game.

Sometimes when multiple people work together to reach a certain goal, it can be much easier to accomplish it. Find people who share similar goals and work with them to achieve them. Having that extra support can help you achieve your goal much easier. You can always use an extra brain to solve a challenge, push you harder, and help you recalibrate your life. (This is another great reason to start or join a mastermind group.)

Never focus on the negative, always keep your mind on the positive. Remember to keep on trucking, no matter what difficulties arise. When you need to get off your butt, think about all the wonderful things in life that keep you going, if you don’t have them, make some. Make your goals easy to obtain and try to find support along the way. Good luck!
