Commenting on other people’s blogs has several advantages for bloggers, especially for those who are just starting out in the industry. Bloggers still consider it as a sound way for building links and driving additional traffic to their individual blogs or websites. This is especially true when commenting on a popular blog within the same industry.
A single sentence can convince 50 people to check out your site and 10 subscribers to subscribe to your RSS feed or emailing lists. Communicating with other people in the community can help generate attention to your site and establish a reputation within the industry.

1. Look for popular blogs within the industry
Know the different major players in your niche. You will need to do some digging to find out what the popular blogs are and who to contact. Only look for blogs within the same niche or blogs that have readers who may be interested in your industry. Targeting totally unrelated blogs will not do you any benefit. If you are doing a web design blog, then use the same terms to find the most popular blogs within your niche.
Before you start leaving comments, it is also important to find out more about the community. Read several posts to see if it is worth participating in. Get a feel for the community as well. If the people commenting on the website sound sarcastic, mean or are not friendly towards new members, you may want to think twice about registering and participating in the community.
2. Reveal your true identity
Use your real name and a picture of yourself. At first, you may feel hesitant in using your real identity online. You may have legitimate reasons for not using your real identity. However, you are trying to establish a reputation within the community and the industry. It would be difficult to build a name if people do not know what you look like or if cannot figure out whether you exist at all. The same goes with using a real picture of yourself. Do not use an avatar or a picture you downloaded off the Internet. Revealing your real identity is one way of building credibility within the community you plan to become involved in.
3. Write valuable comments
You are trying to build a reputation and getting people to check out your site. As such, you should only leave comments if you can contribute to the discussion. Otherwise, people will consider your comment as spam. There are no hard fast rules as to how long a comment should be. If you can express an important opinion in a sentence or two then do so. In most cases, a longer comment is better. If you intend to participate actively in that particular post, shorter or medium-length comments are considered the ideal.
In cases where in a few sentences is not enough to express your opinion, you can choose to write a separate post on your blog in response to the one you read on another person’s blog. Include a link to the original post. The original blogger may appreciate the additional traffic you are sending and may even decide to comment on your post or update the information on his website and include a link to your blog.
4. Be the first on the list
Aim to be one of the first people to comment on the article. There is a greater chance of driving traffic to your blog if you are one of the first people to leave a comment rather than being at the bottom of the list. Keep in mind that this should be done in conjunction with the previous one which is leaving meaningful comments. Leaving comments such as “first” or “nice post” do not count in your efforts.
5. Participate regularly
Become a regular in the community by frequently leaving useful comments on posts. This helps in establishing your reputation and credibility in the community. Building your reputation in other blogs will help draw people to your site.
Commenting on other people’s blogs is still considered a sound technique to build an online reputation. Although it sounds easy, leaving comments requires time and effort. Bloggers should always try to leave meaningful comments as these will be associated to their brand
