Twitter, like many of the major social media hubs, has built in locks against spammy content providers. Put too many links or hashtags in your Tweets, and you will not only find yourself ignored by your human followers, but you will also find your messages not being delivered. Also, Twitter gives no warnings of when this happens, so you have to be especially careful.

Another wrong way of marketing on Twitter is to make all of your Tweets about you. If you do this, even if you do not put links and hashtags in every Tweet, you will soon find that your human audience will not pay attention to you anymore. It is kind of like crying wolf over and over again.

Twitter is not just about your follower count. Value must be added to create a purpose. Twitter is about engaging conversation and sharing information. It’s not about getting a large follower count. Why should people listen to you?

The Right Ways to Market on Twitter

1. Experts agree that one out of every four Tweets, no more, should be about you. The other three Tweets should be a targeted effort to simply add value to the comment rolls of your customers.

2. You can actually include links in the Tweets that are not about yourself. Twitter will make exceptions if your audience responds to your Tweets, and you will find yourself in a position of power when it comes to marketing yourself because people will trust that your Tweets will build value.

3. You must also make sure that you have a theme with all of your Tweets. Even though you should only make one out of every four Tweets about you, all of your Tweets should be about your industry. This will make you seem like the authority in your industry, and you will find that you are re-tweeted more often if you are seen as the go to expert.

4. Tweets that are not about you have a 50% greater chance of being re-tweeted, according to MarketWatch. Tweets that do not have more than two hashtags have a 35% greater chance of being re-tweeted.

5. Speaking of re-tweets, if you want to maximize your chances of being re-tweeted, make sure to leave enough room for someone else to place their name inside of the Tweet. You gain a significant advantage over your competition by allowing those who appreciate your Tweets to get some of the credit for passing along the message.

6. Another great way to market is to somehow attach your message to the popular hash tags of the day. The default Twitter screen is not the best for determining which has tags are the most popular. There are many other independent third-party skins that you can use to better determine what is hot at any particular time.

7. Share photos and behind the scenes info about your business. Even better, give a glimpse of developing projects and events. Users come to Twitter to get and share the latest, so give it to them!

8. Responding is a great way of letting people know you are not a robot. Regularly monitor the comments about your company, brand, and products. Ask questions of your followers to glean valuable insights and show that you are listening.

9. Tweet updates about special offers, discounts and time-sensitive deals. Rewarding your followers is a great way of saying thanks and building valuable trust in your business.

10. Aquire a wider leadership by referencing articles and links about the bigger picture as it relates to your business.

11. Retweet and reply publicly to great tweets posted by your followers and customers.

12. Twitter users tend to prefer a direct, genuine, and of course, a likable tone from your business, but think about your voice as you Tweet. Even if you are the head of social media for your company, your attitude will justify judgemental opinions made about the business you reprsent.
