This article was written for Inspirationfeed by Emma Parkinson. Emma has contributed this guest post article on behalf of Concept CAD who offer printed circuit board design to businesses while being one of the only bureaus in the UK. Are you aware of how impressively technology has escalated? The following is a small timeline of popular modern day technology based on the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries – that’s 300 years worth of tech; looking into cars, cameras, computers and more. Perhaps you sometimes wonder how we could live without our mobile phones or computers – would we even survive without such luxuries!? You’re about to find out. Music Music has always meant a great deal in everybody’s lives whether it was to listen and dance to or to go and watch your favorite band. Let’s face it, without music our lives would be pretty pointless – as Friedrich Nietzsche quoted: “Without music, life would be a mistake.” And he is right! When it came to technology and music, the 1800s introduced us to the Jukebox. Arriving in 1889 and invented by Louis Glass, who received help from pal William S Arnold, recordings had become popular primarily through coin-in-the-slot phonographs in public places such as restaurants and diners. Further enhancements were made in early 1900s with Lee Deforest inventing AM radio that allowed for a multitude of radio stations. He was also the first person who used the word ‘radio’. In 1933 radio technology was progressed by Edwin Armstrong who invented FM radio with super heterodyne tuner that allowed radios to tune into different radio stations. Fast forward to the 21st century and, in 2001, Apple announced the iPod, which was a portable music digital player invented by Steve Jobs. The iPod was announced months shortly after the release of iTunes. A program that converts audio CDs into compressed digital audio files, iTunes could organise your digital music collection. iTunes also allows you to buy online music files which you can simply add to your iPod. Cars A car is the well known way of getting around – the preferred mode of transport for getting from ‘A to B’. Without cars, just imagine how busy public transport would be! 1700 marked the beginning of automobile which took many decades worth of planning by several inventors. Sometime around 1833, Robert Anderson invented the first crude electric-powered carriage powered by non-rechargeable primary cells. Further improvements were made in 1835 when a small scale electric car was invented by Thomas Davenport, the inventor of the first American-built DC electric motor. The Ford Model T produced by Henry Ford was regarded as the first affordable automobile and was named the world’s most influential car of the 20th century. The Model T was set as the historic year that the automobile became popular in 1908. Moving swiftly on to the current century, Ettore Bugatti invented the Bugatti which was awarded ‘car of the decade’ in 2005. Camera Photographs are a great way of capturing memories throughout your life. It’s something to look back on and remember that chapter in your life. Cameras are everywhere now, and the quality is only getting better! Before the terms “megapixels” and “HD” were ever likely to become commonplace, back in the 1800s Joseph Nicephore Niepce used a sliding wooden box to take photographs. As our thirst for capturing a moment intensified, Edwin H. Land Invented the Polaroid Instant Cameras were developed and first sold from 1948. Produced by Nikon in early 2009, a DSLR was released, which was the first DSLR to feature video recording. Nowadays though, cameras are everywhere. Heck, you can even take high resolution images with your mobile phone. Computer Computers have come a long way in the last three centuries. Now everyone has access to a computer that is hooked up to the web – ah the possibilities! Believe it or not, the computers and technical PCB designs we know today can be traced back to 1837 where Charles Babbage proposed the first general mechanical computer, the Analytical Engine. The Analytical Engine contained an Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), basic flow control, and integrated memory and was the first general-purpose computer concept. Produced by Italian manufacturer Olivetti, the Programma 101, released in 1965, was the first commercial desktop computer and helped to pave the way for the office environments we’re privy to today. In 2011, IBM announced the Smart Cloud framework to support Smarter Planet. Among the various components of the Smarter Computing foundation, cloud computing is a critical piece. The Telephone Without the telephone there would be no way of getting in contact with people unless we meet them face to face. What did we ever do if we had an emergency? You can’t imagine what it was like before telephones become a way of communication. The popularity of telephones has soared to an extreme amount – with over 999 billion phone users worldwide! In the 1870s, the telephone was invented by Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell both independently designed devices that could transmit speech electrically. Dr. Martin Cooper invented the first portable handset and was the first person to make a call on the portable cell phone in 1973. The Motorola Dyna-Tac was the first commercial mobile phone invented. Touch screen mobile devices – or smartphones – have become wildly popular in the 21st century after Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007. What started out as a means of communication between one voice and another is now so much more than that. Hoover/Vacuum Cleaner The hoover – or the Vacuum Cleaner – was, and probably still is, the main key to cleaning. The vacuum cleaner evolved from the carpet sweeper which was dedicated to cleaning up carpet, but now carpet is becoming less popular with laminate flooring taking over. The Hoover, or what is often referred to as the Vacuum Cleaner, was the first hand pumped Vacuum Cleaner, and was invented in 1860 by Daniel Hess. In 1901, H. Cecil Booth introduced the first powered vacuum cleaner model that used the technology of the vacuum tube. Dr. Helen Greiner at iRobot invented the Roomba vacuum cleaner, which entered the market in 2002. These small vacuums can be placed on the floor and roam around freely without the manual hardship of pushing it around. Public Transport Unless everybody drove – public transport is our only way of getting about! There is so many ways of getting to places now with the help from trains, buses, ferries, trams, aeroplanes – the lot! Before anyone bemoaned about the unreliability of public transport, the horse drawn omnibus originated in Paris and was brought to England by the coachbuilder George Shillibeer in 1829 and was used to take members of the community from place to place – albeit slowly. In 1909 the engineer Thomas Clarkson started the National Steam Car Company to run steam buses in London. As public transport has become a staple method of arriving at a pre-defined destination, more than 6.3m hybrid buses have been sold worldwide through March 2013 led by the Toyota Motor Company. As Technology continues to grow we would expect Technology to become more reliable and progress even further! I wonder what the future hold?

This article was written for Inspirationfeed by Fraser Strand. Fraser specializes in technology, gadgets, and adventure sports. He often writes for specialist blogs such as The History Of Batteries and spends most of his time buying gadgets, sailing, camping, and falling out of planes. So you’ve probably heard about Google’s latest attempt to break into the hardware industry; Google Glass. But what’s it all about, why should you care, and how do you get one? These are the questions I’ll be answering after a quick aside from Google themselves: “Glass is a potentially transformative technology. It’s a window into the world’s information, and a new way to share experiences with those you care about.” - Google Ventures What’s It All About? The idea is that Google will free us from handheld and desktop devices altogether such that access to data is easy and immediate. To do this they have created a pair of glasses which can project interactive information into your field of vision and allow you to effortlessly perform tasks through voice commands and simple touches to the frame. Google claims that this device heralds a new world of “wearable computing” which will change our relationship with computers and with the internet. Their aim is that this device will become as ubiquitous as the mobile phone (but with game-changing consequences). A Google Glass device includes: a 5 megapixel camera (which can record 720p video), 16GB of storage, a touchpad on the side of the frame, Wifi, and Bluetooth. This spec allows you to film videos, take pictures, check emails, make calls/texts, navigate to your destination via GPS, and search the internet hands free. To achieve this experience, the Glass uses a small prism to project various interactive visual elements into the top-right area of your vision. This is designed to augment your reality so that you have continual access to information that can be layered on top of your normal field of vision; the screen that is projected to be the equivalent of looking at a 25-inch HD screen from 8 feet. As soon as data is overlaid over your vision, the benefits of Glass become very clear – GPS functionality becomes a seamless and intuitive experience, real-time translation is easy and hands free, and notifications from calls, texts, and emails are immediate and easy to deal with. Equally, the voice-recognition is meant to be extremely good and functions as well for calls as it does for voice commands (even in crowded rooms). When interviewed by The Guardian, Andrej Kostresevic stated that “I can walk around all day and respond to emails and text messages just by speaking, even in noisy rooms – it’s really cool.” Why Should I Care? You’re not alone in asking this question, many people are confused as to the value and practicality of continually “wearing” your phone or laptop (which is essentially the premise of this technology). Opinion ranges drastically from the extremely conservative nay-sayers who fear its effect on our human relationships and privacy, to the fanatics who believe it will change technology forever and pledge to wear it in the most extreme of places. In the same interview, Kostresevic qualified his earlier praise with the sentiment “however Glass is a bit of a mixed bag… overall feeling is just that it’s kind of a tease; it’s a glimpse into what could be possible, but the technology just isn’t there yet.” Major criticisms are levelled at the short battery life, the screen being hard to see in daylight, and the lack of applications and functionality. Google is primarily a software company and their forays into hardware have been mixed at best, let’s face it they wouldn’t be the first multi-national corporation to take a gamble into a new technology that doesn’t pay off – look at the Nokia N-Gage. So should you care about Glass at this point? Whether you can see yourself using them or not, this stands a very good chance of being a significant technical development: it’s a pioneering product backed by the largest digital company in the world; chances are it’s worth keeping an eye on. There also seems to be such a vivacious momentum surrounding Glass from within the Google campus that you can’t help but get carried away with it. From the ridiculous launch event with skydivers and BMXers donning the device, to the global competition and pre-launch fan base, the feeling is that Google believes in this 100%, with no holding back. So should you care? With that much weight behind it, absolutely yes. How Do I Get A Google Glass? Unfortunately you can’t. Not yet at least, the brilliant minds at Google allowed a sample of 8,000 contest winners who submitted a 50 word summary of what they would do if they won the device. These avid testers have got a first glimpse since late March but it didn’t come cheap; the device still cost them $1500 so Google is obviously keen to make sure their perceived value stays high (at the cost of tainting their benevolent public image by charging so much for a test product). The rumour mill has gone crazy as to whether they’re going to do another competition or whether they’ll be launching to the consumer market by Christmas. I won’t add to this speculation other than to say that the best way to stay up to date, is to sign up to Google Glass’s official mailing list at http://www.google.com/glass/start/how-to-get-one. Just make sure if you do get one, you use it for good and not evil…

These are the questions I’ll be answering after a quick aside from Google themselves:

“Glass is a potentially transformative technology. It’s a window into the world’s information, and a new way to share experiences with those you care about.” - Google Ventures

What’s It All About?

When interviewed by The Guardian, Andrej Kostresevic stated that “I can walk around all day and respond to emails and text messages just by speaking, even in noisy rooms – it’s really cool.”

This article was written for Inspirationfeed by Dexter Morris. Dexter is working as a tech support specialist in NYC. Besides being a tech enthusiast, he has a passion for writing on topics related to computer and technology. He is also a master troubleshooter and when he is not troubleshooting, he is busy with his PS3. Arguably, the laptop can be considered as one of the most important inventions in computing technology in the recent years. It has definitely redefined how people use computers, free from the wires and bulky hardware of its desktop predecessor. While there are more compact computing devices available in the market today such as tablets and even smartphones, the laptop is still an important part of people’s gadgets arsenal – from the gamer, busy executives to the basic users. Buying a laptop is no rocket science, but it’s not a no-brainer decision as well especially if you want to get the most out of your money. If you’re planning to go on laptop shopping soon, here are five handy tips you should bring with you. Tip #1: Honesty is the Best Policy Be true to yourself in terms of how you are planning to use your laptop. This is the first step of any laptop-buying process as it will dictate the system requirements and functionalities that you should look for. Further, it will determine related products that you need. For example, if you’re a music buff or a move enthusiast and you’re planning on downloading several media files, you would need a laptop with big storage space. Additionally, you would need to install a powerful antivirus software to protect your computer from malicious programs and downloadable media files. So, before you even read reviews and scout your laptop options, ask yourself: “Why am I buying a laptop?” Tip #2: Size Matters Why do you think many brands have come up with ultra-portable laptop models? As people become more mobile, thin is definitely is in. The slimmer and the lighter your laptop is the better. If you’re an events planner who needs to move around to meet clients and suppliers or a writer who needs to go to different places in order to be inspired, then size and weight will definitely matter. Again, the portability of the laptop you choose will affect the extra peripheral services or products that you will need. If you’re planning to use your laptop in different locations and using whatever internet connectivity is available, then you need an antivirus protection software that can protect your laptop even if you are connected to an unsecure internet network. Tip #3: Style Matters Consider your laptop as a fashion accessory with really cool high-tech features. Just like how you select your outfitand the accessories that go with it, your laptop should reflect your personal style and taste. Are you a straightforward, no nonsense type of guy? Then maybe streamlined and traditional laptop looks would be right for you. Are you a really stylish fashionista? Then Mac’s visually appealing chassis and the really striking ultrabooks should suit you well. Of course, you can always personalize your laptop by adding blings or decals and other add-ons to customize the look of your laptop. However, the style of the laptop you choose should already reflect your style sensibilities on the get go. Tip #4: Budget Beyond the Laptop Itself First time buyers think that they need to splurge and spend thousands of dollars on a laptop to get the best the world has to offer. Go ahead if you have the money, but if you don’t, there are competitively priced laptops out there that have both form and function. When budgeting for a laptop, don’t just consider the cost of the device itself. You also need to factor in everything to get you started which would include applications you need to install and other vital services such as an antivirus protection software. These things are not that expensive, but when added up, you may be faced with expenses you did not expect and plan for. Think of the bigger picture and make sure that you take all these into consideration when budgeting. Tip #5: Brand Does Matter Let’s face it. Not all laptops are created equal and there are brands that have better track records compared to their counterparts (it’s the same with your choice of antivirus protection software; there are brands that stand out over the others). Read reviews online. Ask your friends or family about their experience on a particular brand you’re considering. Read industry publications for unbiased opinions and expert recommendations.
This article was written for Inspirationfeed by Charles Mburugu. Charles is a professional blogger who likes sharing tips for internet marketers and bloggers. Currently, he is writing for freetemplatesonline.com. Nowadays, there are thousands of companies out there offering web hosting services. As a result, many people end up confused and frustrated when looking for a host for their website. The following tips will help you choose the best web host for your site. 1. Reliability A web host should not only be fast, but should offer a great uptime guarantee. This guarantee will compel the web hosting provider to ensure that their servers are working nonstop. Find a company that provides a minimum uptime guarantee of 99%. If they happen to fall below this figure, they should be willing to offer a discount or a refund. However, it is not easy for a user to enforce an uptime guarantee. The host could even deny knowledge about the downtime. And in that case, you should move on to the next company. 2. Bandwidth and disk space Bandwidth, which is also known as ‘traffic’, refers to the amounts of data transferred when visitors browse your site. Before signing up with a commercial web host, find out the capacity of the bandwidth offered. However, look out for web hosts which claim to offer ‘unlimited’ bandwidth. In reality, this is not possible. Read the fine print to find out what they really mean by ‘unlimited’, otherwise, you might find yourself paying extra costs due to exceeding the ‘unlimited’ bandwidth. When it comes to disk space, you need to find a web host which offers sufficient space for your site’s needs. Usually, a site which contains images, videos or music requires more space than one which only contains text. If you seeing your site growing bigger over time, make sure your host will allow you to upgrade your account in future. 3. Technical support Does the web host offer 24/7 technical support? Since things can go wrong at any time, you need to find a host that provides support even on public holidays and weekends. However, just because a host promises round the clock support does not mean that they can deliver. One of the best ways of testing them is by calling them on a Saturday night or emailing them on a Sunday morning. Find out how much time it takes for them to respond. In addition, you need to check for their technical proficiency. 4. Shopping cart and SSL (secure server) If you intend to sell any products and services through your site, you might need to find a web host which offers the shopping cart feature. However, this feature usually involves extra charges or a more expensive package. In case you are planning to process credit card payments on your site, SSL is a must to ensure the security of your customers. 6. Control panel Every web host offers a control panel allows you to administer various aspects of your account. For instance, you should be able to do basic things such as alter your passwords, as well as add or delete your email addresses. Make sure you find a web host that offers a well designed and easy to use control panel. However, beware of hosts who require you to contact customer support for help with even the simplest maintenance task. 7. Payment plan Most web hosts offer annual, quarterly or monthly payment plans. Don’t be tempted to sign up for the annual plan immediately, even if the web host offers a ‘money back guarantee’ to anyone dissatisfied with their services. You cannot be sure that they will honor their promise. Therefore, when signing up with a new host, it would be advisable to pay monthly until you are certain of their reliability. In case you are not satisfied with their services, you will be able to quickly transfer to a different host. However, if the web host proves reliable, you can switch to the annual payment plan. 8. Reviews Before signing up with any web host, you need to find out what other people are saying about them. There are many web hosting review sites out there where people share their opinions. However, don’t be quick to believe everything you read. Negative reviews might have been posted by the competitors of a particular web host. Similarly, a web host might get people to write false reviews praising their services.
Does the web host offer 24/7 technical support? Since things can go wrong at any time, you need to find a host that provides support even on public holidays and weekends. However, just because a host promises round the clock support does not mean that they can deliver. One of the best ways of testing them is by calling them on a Saturday night or emailing them on a Sunday morning. Find out how much time it takes for them to respond. In addition, you need to check for their technical proficiency.

4. Shopping cart and SSL (secure server)

If you intend to sell any products and services through your site, you might need to find a web host which offers the shopping cart feature. However, this feature usually involves extra charges or a more expensive package. In case you are planning to process credit card payments on your site, SSL is a must to ensure the security of your customers.

6. Control panel

Every web host offers a control panel allows you to administer various aspects of your account. For instance, you should be able to do basic things such as alter your passwords, as well as add or delete your email addresses. Make sure you find a web host that offers a well designed and easy to use control panel. However, beware of hosts who require you to contact customer support for help with even the simplest maintenance task.

7. Payment plan

Most web hosts offer annual, quarterly or monthly payment plans.

8. Reviews

Before signing up with any web host, you need to find out what other people are saying about them. There are many web hosting review sites out there where people share their opinions. However, don’t be quick to believe everything you read. Negative reviews might have been posted by the competitors of a particular web host. Similarly, a web host might get people to write false reviews praising their services.

The storage is an important part in any digital device. Some tech-savvy people buy a digital device just for a high storage capacity. Nowadays it is a part of the tradition in technology to come up with higher capacity storage facility in any gadget, to get the buyers’ attention. There are many variants of storage options available for the tech-minded people. Some of them are; flash drives, flash memories, internal and external hard disks, SSD (solid state drive) etc. All of them are of different variants and capacities. The flash drive and memory card come at the maximum capacity of 64GB. Imagine the possibilities with these tiny storage chips in future. Hard drives and SSD In modern day computing, hard drives are used for large scale storage while Solid State Drives are used for fast data transfer rate (DTR). The maximum capacity of hard disks in present day is up to 3TB. The capacity is huge, and these are technically called high density drives. The days of floppy drives are over; this was capable of storing only 1.44MB of data. The solid state memory is a recent invention. Unlike the hard drives, it has no movable parts inside, so data security and integrity in solid state storage are much more advanced. It is available in the market today for desktops for high performance data transfer. The Nano-imprinting technology for future This new technology claims to double the capacity of the drives available today. The personal data storage needs are increasing rapidly, so people are enthusiastic in such technologies to arrive. It is a kind of self-assembling method that this technology is capable of making high density drives in the future. If such technology really succeeds, then it will definitely come for the iPhone 4 users. The current maximum capacity of this phone is 64GB, but with the arrival of such technologies, the smartphone manufacturer giants will sure adapt the new technology for their devices. The HAMR and the PMR The HAMR stands for heat assisted magnetic recording. It is an innovative digital storage technology for future. This technology claims to offer the storage solution up to 60TB within the next ten or twelve years. This new method of storage supports 2 million bits/inch of linear bit density. The perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology available today only offers density of 620GB/sq. Inch. Now, you can imagine the possibilities with HAMR. The first digital storage technology for computer was invented in 1956 named, longitudinal recording. The PMR method is quite new as it was released in 2006. The flash memory revolution As the innovation progresses for computer hard drives, the revolution for flash memory has also come a long way from the past. The recent innovations of the flash drives and memories helped this segment of storage a lot. The maximum capacity is up to 1TB, and it is already invented by some of the manufacturers. So, small portable gadget owners can expect to have them in their devices in the coming years. The new innovative technologies for flash memories are also on the line of research. The increasing market demand for high capacity storage is one main reason such revolution in digital storage.
Identity theft is becoming rampant online. One type of ID theft that is often overlooked is social media identity theft. Thanks to social media sites like Facebook, connecting with family, friends, and long-lost contacts is now so much easier. Before, many childhood friends may have never seen each other again. With Facebook, now they can meet again in the same lifetime. However, if there’s anything bad that social media has brought, it is this: the individuals boundaries are so often dropped down, that they fail to see the ills of over sharing. One big problem with over sharing is this: some of you social media users may fail to protect your identity, revealing certain crucial details that actually lead to ID theft once they fall in the wrong hands. Here are some details that a social media user should NEVER share: 1. Birth year. It would be safer to just show your age, vanity be damned. In fact, if you’re so vain about your age, then you better not show any form of your birthdate at all. The birthdate is a detail needed in credit card and bank transactions, so if you unwittingly reveal it, you may have just failed to protect your credit online. 2. Mother’s maiden name. Another piece of data that could lead to ID theft is your mother’s maiden name. This is because the mother’s maiden name is actually a way to retrieve one’s password. It is also used in social security and bank data. 3. Your SSN. While the SSN is rarely required in applying for a social media account, you should still bear in mind that your SSN is never meant to be shared. In fact, the only person you should share your SSN with would be your company’s HR. Online social accounts don’t really require your SSN, so there is no reason for you to use this in social websites. However, if anyone ever tries to solicit your SSN from you, “run away” (by unfriending then blocking the person) and never look back. These three pieces of data are best kept to yourself, if you’re looking to prevent identity theft. If you feel like ID theft can never happen to you, think about this: A lady was traveling across Europe when she discovered that her credit accounts were stolen and broken into and USED by a credit card thief. An unwitting entrepreneur was just minding his own business when he discovered that a thief had used his company details to obtain several phone lines and cellphones. Over 140,000 children are victims of ID theft yearly. With these alarming cases and statistics, you could never be too sure. Here are ways that an ID theft will adversely affect you: 1. Your credit score could plummet. 2. It takes around 22 work days to clean up the effects of ID and credit theft. 3. It will take 6 years before items on your credit report would be removed. When your credit score plummets, this is what happens: You will have a harder time getting approval for credit card applications. You will have a harder time securing an auto loan. You will have a harder time in securing a mortgage for your dream home. With these consequences, you should already be alarmed and become wary about using your ID details on social networking sites. Here are a few guidelines to deter social media identity theft: Don’t add strangers as your friends. Don’t approve strangers as your friends. Don’t even think that there’s a valid reason to give away your SSN. Don’t give out details to dates whether you meet them online or through a friend. Be wary of Craigslist posts. If you must meet people for Craigslist deals, do it in a public place with CCTV and don’t give out your credit and identity details. If it’s a cash transaction anyway, they won’t need any of that at all. On the last point, it is worth noting that Craigslist has had a rise in being the portal for criminal activity in latter times. Thus, to keep yourself safe, take note of our tips above. Note that some of the Craigslist crimes have even included murder. It is also worth noting that some very disappointed ID theft victims were exes of people they’ve dated. Some are even ex-spouses. You can never be too sure of who will steal from you. If close family members and even romantic partners could commit ID theft, how much more likely could strangers be that you’ve just met online? Always be wary when it comes to social media identity theft. There really is no telling when someone will steal your identity and use it for their own purposes.
Every now and then, web designers and website owners rethink the way they’ve been reaching their visitors. Largely to embrace new technologies, these “re-thinking” periods resulted in the transition to more interactive, Web 2.0-style designs roughly a decade ago. Over the course of 2012 web designers and developers really began adopting and implementing this so-called Web 3.0 approach. Now, even more so, over the course of 2013, website operators and developers will begin moving toward a revised, Web 3.0 approach that once again transform’s the Internet’s appearance, functionality, and utility, for large amounts of users around the world. Internet users and consumers have seen other trends like this come and go without ever really knowing what came and went. From the other side of the table, webmasters, designers, programmers and marketers get the priviledge of seeing these changes to the web from the front row. So, let’s take a closer look at Web 3.0. Introducing the Semantic Web Generally speaking, “Web 3.0″ and “Semantic Web” are interchangeable terms used in many high-tech circles. The term refers to an Internet experience that actually allows direct interaction between human users and the computers that serve them websites, blog posts, and more. The hope is that Web 3.0 will arrive as a way for hyper-intelligent software programs and applications to actually generate information on websites with little to no user intervention. One way to understand just how this differs from the way people use the Internet at the present time is to consider a basic search using a major search engine like Google. Today, people type in choppy keywords and phrases that they hope will lead them to the best results. A Google visitor looking for nearby gyms might type “fitness centers Los Angeles CA.” While this makes sense to Google, and it returns extremely helpful results, it doesn’t make much sense in typical human conversation. Though it makes sense to Google, wouldn’t the technology better serve the human if the human could communicate with the technology in a more cogent way? In a Web 3.0 world, visitors will head to Google and say, “I’m looking for a gym close to home.” A list will be returned of the nearest gyms to the browser’s geographic location. The same thing will happen on smaller sites when conducting searches of content, or engaging with other users. The Semantic Web is one that polishes the interaction between human conversation and digital content delivery. In other words, it makes this transfer of data and information more seamless and fluid. With Web 3.0, A Commitment to Fluid Design The focus of Web 2.0 was on basic user engagement, including anything from commenting on a blog post to sharing that blog post via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other services. Design reflected this rather quickly, with large and highly visible buttons that mimicked real-life textures. The goal was to combine the offline world with online convenience, catering to new Internet users and seasoned pros alike. Design is about to undergo another major change on the back of Web 3.0′s mainstream adoption. Designs will become more reactive and responsive, as is already being seen when websites adapt their width and typography to mobile or desktop screen resolutions. Websites will respond intelligently and highlight their more semantic features, turning the Internet into more of a conversation and less of a keyword-targeted point-and-click routine. This is a very important point for marketers to start grasping. All told, it’s an exciting time to be using the Internet. With more semantic tools and more highly evolved designs than ever before, the next chapter in humanity’s shared online experience looks to be the most natural and usable one to date.
Every generation of adults likes to bemoan the attitude and interests of the generation that is younger than they are. The mantra that teenagers are lazy, reckless and have no appreciation for fine art and literature is one that has been repeated for hundreds of years. It’s true that young people have different tastes to their parents and even their older siblings. What’s changed in the last few decades, however, is that even adults in their 20′s and 30′s seem to be moving away from Opera, Ballet, and weekend trips to museums and art galleries. We want different things from our entertainment, and we expect to be able to interact with – and even shape – that entertainment in ways that previous generations could only have imagined. Interactive Entertainment Traditionally, fine art is something that is consumed passively. You walk around the art gallery and look at each piece on display, or sit down in a theater and silently watch as the story unfolds in front of you. Such passive consumption is alien to modern consumers, and it’s natural that they would get bored and listless after a while. New forms of art are emerging, however. Tell Tale Games created an interactive adventure based on The Walking Dead, which allows players to make choices and dictate how the story unfolds. The player is given difficult choices, and the emotions that the game brings out are powerful, and as real – or more real, than the ones that people feel when watching a good movie or play. Tale of Tales developed an interactive virtual world called The Endless Forest, which puts the viewer in the place of a Deer. The viewer wanders the forest, which includes other deer also controlled by humans. There is no chat, no “game”, no real purpose other than to allow players to wander around in a peaceful and picturesque environment. The world was designed as a piece of art, and has been well received at many festivals. Merging Technology and Art Technology can be used to make performance art more interesting, too. Artist Frank Stella created a performance piece called 9 Score, where he played a game of tennis, and every time he or his tennis partner hit the ball with their racquets, one of the lights in the ceiling would go out. When the court was completely darkened, 500 people walked out, and their movements were displayed on a screen using infra-red cameras. The spectators could not see the people directly in front of them, but could only watch their movements replicated on a screen. Standing the Test of Time Are games and technology-assisted performance pieces going to stand the test of time? People still queue up to see Shakespeare’s plays today, but will they do the same for technical gimmicks such as 9 Score? Fine art’s strength is that it is simple, powerful, and brings out emotions that anyone, from anywhere in the world, can identify with. It’s good to see art evolving, but let’s not forget what it is that makes it special. If you’re looking to “wow” someone who is typically unfazed by everyday technology, you most likely haven’t a clue as to where you should begin your search. Sure, you could spend a lot of money, but gifts like laptops are a bit personal and may not be your best bet. Whether you’re a tech newbie or you own all the newest and greatest tech devices, you’ll be able to find the perfect gift for your techie. Here are some of the great new tech gifts of 2013. Logitech T650 Touchpad Wouldn’t it be amazing to find a Windows 8-supported touchpad that functioned properly? No longer must we wait for such technology! Logitech is going full-steam ahead with this large, glass-covered touchpad that not only works efficiently with Windows 8, but also supports custom gestures for all your intricate and specific needs. Fitted with a large multi-touch surface, the T650 Touchpad is great for any Windows-based computer. It should me said that its functionality with Mac products is notably limited, and honestly, this isn’t the right purchase for you if you are part of the Apple faithful. But if you’re techie has been longing for a quality touchpad for their Windows computer or tablet, the Logitech T650 is an affordable, quality product.
