Branding Ascendancy: Fuel Coffee Shop in Brighton, MA.

Fuel is a new “vintage-modern” American coffeehouse that celebrates friendships, inspiration, hard work, and the American “can-do” spirit. To “Ignite your Journey,” they offer custom coffee, better beverages, fresh foods and baked goods.

What caught my attention about this ordinary coffee shop, was the well executed all around branding. Richie Stewart of Commoner Inc, was commissioned to design the branding and packaging for Fuel Coffee. For further explanation on the process, check out the following quote:

“Our goal for the design was to play off the name of the brand and create a concept that referenced the aesthetic of old motor oil cans. We sourced some super shiny, metallic bags to suggest what the material of those cans would have originally been made of.

We did 1& 2 color prints on self adhesive labels with the main logo mark and style of coffee. These were then applied to each bag individually. Not only did this save on cost but it gave the finished product a slightly more human, handmade quality which mirrors the small batch roasting process in which the coffee was made.” - Richie Stewart

The vibe and experience portrayed thought the images really encourage me to take a trip to Massachusetts. I’m a big advocate of the retro and vintage design trend. Even if you’re not in the same boat, I truly feel that the style and execution of Fuel Coffee is worth admiring. Enjoy!

Russell Shaw is an independent designer from Atlanta. He specializes in illustration, graphic design, logo and branding design, book layouts, user interface/experience, and video. Some of his previous clients are Microsoft, AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” SweetWater Brewery, The W Atlanta – Midtown, Bearings, Manner & Lane, The DeMoss Group, GiantImpact, Catalyst Conference, Uptown Treehouse, Plywood People, Lamon Luther, and more.

Russell recently finished a branding identity for Lamon Luther. Lamon Luther preserves the legacy of the rugged gentleman, forging a brand that builds hope for the craftsman. Born at the start of the Great Depression, Lamon Luther, the man, was a mechanic, carpenter, and farmer. A maker in every sense of the word, he used his calloused hands to create works of art as well as provide for his family.

“The visual identity was built from a mastered version of the signature of Lamon Luther Wilson, the ancestor of the company’s founder. The signature is the ideal symbol of the unique hand-crafted quality behind each of the company’s product lines. The two crossed adz (signifying the time-honored method of creation that the company employs) on top of a saw-like structure – serving as a unique stamp or “brand mark” pressed into the wood of the products.” - Russell Shaw

The icon and signature often come arranged in a lockup with the company’s central motif, “Hope For The Craftsmen,” to drive home the notion that Lamon Luther is more than just a design-build organization – it is a team of formerly homeless workers now on their way toward restored lives.

Golf is a gentleman’s sport and a game of confidence. In golf, competing players use many types of clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a golf course using the fewest number of strokes. Golf is a very wealthy sport and is widely adopted. In 2005, Golf Digest calculated that the countries with most golf courses per capita, starting with the best endowed were: Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Canada, Wales, United States, Sweden, and England.

Today we will be showcasing twenty-five cleverly designed golf logos for your inspiration. The designers behind the following logos clearly understand simplicity and cleanliness. The most common objects that automatically scream gold when you see them are: golf drivers, gold balls, golf course, green color, white color, flag, hole, golf tees, class, style, luxury, tee box, putting green, fairway, rough, hazards,putting, sinking, drive, iron,golf clubs, swing,hilly terrain, strokes, push, fade, draw, hook, eagle, birdie, par, bogey, double bogey, triple bogey, double eagle, albatross, match play, stroke play, skins, and stableford. Even if a brand is trying to express their core values and identity through a logo, there will always be the true side that the customers see. Let’s be honest, if you’re a publicly traded company your number one priority is to make more money and beat estimates. Personally speaking, I trust privately owned companies that put their money where their mouth is and illustrate good morals throughout their brand more than public companies.
