A commencement speech is an address given to graduating students. Generally at a university, a commencement speech is typically given by a notable figure in the community such as entrepreneurs, politicians, celebrities, or other notable speakers. We clearly realize that we have readers that are out of school and have been for quite some time. However when you are down or in need of wisdom, commencement speeches can be extremely inspirational and realign you to the right path. Today we collected fifteen must see speeches. They aren’t short, so grab some snacks and your favorite beverage. Enjoy! 1) Steve Jobs, Stanford University, 2005 2) Neil Gaiman, University of the Arts, 2012 3) Ellen DeGeneres Tulane speech 4) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emory University, 2010 5) Conan O’Brien, Dartmouth 2011 6) Oprah Winfrey, Stanford 2008 7) Sheryl Sandberg, Barnard 2011 8) Randy Pausch, Carnegie Mellon University, 2008 9) Melissa Harris-Perry, Wellesley College 2012 10) “You Are Not Special” from Wellesley High School 11) Randy Pausch, Carnegie Mellon 2008 12) Bill Gates, Harvard University 13) Jeff Bezos, Princeton 2010 14) Larry Page, University of Michigan 2009 15) J.K.
In a world of mass communication, 24-hour TV, wall-to-wall entertainment and the ever-increasing vastness of the internet, it gets harder and harder to find high-quality viewing amongst the oceans of mediocrity. Against this background, the TEDTalks website shines like a beacon of excellence. ‘TED’ originated in 1984, promoting ‘Technology, Entertainment, Design’. Video site TEDTalks was later introduced to show inspirational talks to the widest possible audience: as it proclaims, it’s all about ‘ideas worth spreading’. Anyone who hasn’t yet encountered the wonders of TEDTalks is in for a surprise – and a treat. It’s nothing short of a phenomenon, offering a stunning collection of informative, educational, erudite – or sometimes simply entertaining – material, all completely free. Two annual TED conferences, one in California and the other in Edinburgh, attract some of the most brilliant ‘thinkers and doers’, with the remit of talking about their lives or work – and doing so in no more than 18 minutes. Some manage in far less. And the compelling results can be seen on TEDTalks, along with other videos, mainly from the many TED events that are now held around the world. All talks are fully searchable, and you can sort the results by various different criteria. Only got six minutes and want something that other viewers have found ‘jaw-dropping’? No problem: there will be a talk to fit the bill. Or have half-an-hour or so to while away and fancy something less mind-numbing than a soap opera? Just enter a length of time and your viewing preference – perhaps something informative, perhaps funny – and a playlist will be generated for you. It’s a good idea to start off gently, and investigating the most viewed three-minute videos gives an indication of the potential. Bobby McFerrin plays… the audience! Number one, with 4,082,981 views at time of writing, is ‘Bobby McFerrin plays… the audience!’ Filmed at the World Science Festival in June 2009, musician McFerrin has infectious fun with the pentatonic scale, revealing some surprising aspects of human anticipation and expectation. It’s a joyful clip, and impossible to watch without a smile. 8 Secrets of Success Number two (3,127,633 views) is ‘8 Secrets of Success’, filmed at TED2005. Analyst Richard St John spent many years investigating why some people succeed and others don’t – and then distilled a decade’s research into a mere 8 keywords, relayed in 3½ minutes. In just 210 seconds he conveys more inspirational information than an entire shelf of self-help books. Try something new for 30 days Number three (2,617,457 views) is Google engineer Matt Cutts at TED2011, asking his audience to ‘Try something new for 30 days’. It’s a recipe for effective change – a light-hearted but persuasive call to action. Anyone wishing to break one habit or start another would do well to invest a few minutes of their time listening to this advice. How to start a movement Number four (2,090,931 views) is musician and entrepreneur Derek Sivers at TED2012, on ‘How to start a movement’. He explains how it’s the followers who make a leader, not the actual leader – however charismatic he or she may be. As he says: “It’s the first follower who transforms a lone nut into a leader.” And he has a wonderfully funny video to prove it. Keep your goals to yourself And at number five (1,611,739 views) is Derek Sivers again, this time from TED2010, explaining why it’s wise to ‘Keep your goals to yourself’. He demonstrates the proven – and disappointing – consequences of telling family and friends about your ambitions; it sounds counter-intuitive, but after three minutes you’ll be convinced. But these five are just by way of introduction to TEDTalks: there are far, far more, and once you’ve discovered them they’ll provide hours of enriching fun. You can seek out your own ‘top five’, selecting the criteria and devoting however much time you choose. It’s astonishing how much knowledge, enthusiasm and sometimes beauty can be conveyed in such succinct presentations. Watch ‘Symbiosis’ by Pilobolus: it’s gorgeous, even if you didn’t think you liked modern dance. Be intrigued as colour-blind artist Neil Harbisson explains how his “eyeborg” allows him to hear colour. Be moved as Stacey Kramer reveals how a frightening experience turned out to be a priceless gift, giving her life new meaning. It isn’t all contemporary. Material from TED’s early days has been digitised and put online. And there’s a rare pre-TED 1972 clip of the legendary Viktor Frankl talking about humanity’s search for meaning in life. If anyone wants help in their own search for the meaning of life, they could do worse than listen to TEDTalks. There is great wisdom, and some exceptional entertainment too. If everyone spared just a few minutes a day to listen to a TEDTalk, they’d feel individually enriched. And the world would probably be a better place. Check out our previous articles!

8 Secrets of Success

Number two (3,127,633 views) is ‘8 Secrets of Success’, filmed at TED2005. Analyst Richard St John spent many years investigating why some people succeed and others don’t – and then distilled a decade’s research into a mere 8 keywords, relayed in 3½ minutes. In just 210 seconds he conveys more inspirational information than an entire shelf of self-help books.

Number three (2,617,457 views) is Google engineer Matt Cutts at TED2011, asking his audience to ‘Try something new for 30 days’. It’s a recipe for effective change – a light-hearted but persuasive call to action. Anyone wishing to break one habit or start another would do well to invest a few minutes of their time listening to this advice.

How to start a movement

Number four (2,090,931 views) is musician and entrepreneur Derek Sivers at TED2012, on ‘How to start a movement’. He explains how it’s the followers who make a leader, not the actual leader – however charismatic he or she may be. As he says: “It’s the first follower who transforms a lone nut into a leader.” And he has a wonderfully funny video to prove it.

Keep your goals to yourself

And at number five (1,611,739 views) is Derek Sivers again, this time from TED2010, explaining why it’s wise to ‘Keep your goals to yourself’.

This is a small animation a did as an exercise to experiment and explore all the graphical possibilities of representing the idea of the SPHERE, always thinking in searching Gestalt and form. Its all done in 3d, but i was more interested in the graphical interest, flatten the surfaces, and only two colors, why more. The most difficult was to achieve the transitions between the different type of representation of the sphere, the morphing and metamorphosing.

This year’s Super Bowl was the most watched television show in U.S. history. Boasting 111.3 million viewers, this year’s game narrowly beat last year’s record of just over 111 million. This must mean that a lot of people like football, right? Wrong. People don’t watch the Super Bowl solely for the football. While most of us avoid pesky commercials all year long by utilizing the skip-ahead button on our Tivos, the Super Bowl is known for offering viewers the year’s most entertaining commercials. Here are this year’s top rated: 1. Doritos – “Man’s Best Friend” Doritos as payment for silence about Fluffy’s disappearance. It could happen to anyone. 2. Bud Light – “Here Weego” Every man’s dream: Not only does this man have his best friend, he also as a personal beer maid. 3. Doritos – “Sling Baby” If only this grandma and baby ragtag team had been around when we were on the playground… 4. Kia – “A Dream Car. For Real Life.” Silly sandman. Women’s dream man isn’t a man on horseback; it’s a man in a Kia. 5. M&Ms – “Just My Shell” The red M&M’s fist pump is epic. 6. Sketchers – “Go Run” Greyhounds don’t have anything on a bulldog with a pair of Sketchers… 7. Volkswagen – “The Dog Strikes Back” Who needs the Biggest Loser when this dog is around? 8. Audi – “Vampire Party” Audi just brought a whole new meaning to the term, “party crasher.” 9. Chevrolet – “Silverado” Just in case you didn’t hear about the Mayan’s 2012 prediction… 10. Honda CRV – “Matthew’s Day Off” It’s good to see that Ferris Bueller never changed.
When I was in primary school, MTV was already MTV. Every time I come home from school, switching our TV on to MTV seemed automatic and I’ll be glued to our couch and just watch music videos. Somehow, somewhere in between my childhood, MTV has influenced me greatly – from the stickers on my room, to the way I think and dress. During those days I’d welcome any music I encountered in MTV – from metal to grunge to alternative rock. I was mesmerized by the appeal and creativity MTV provided in their shows (of course, musicians and their respective directors are to be given credit, too, for creativity). One thing that stood out in MTV’s time as a “Music” Television was their unique and sometimes eccentric animated identity. Over the span of more than three decades of air time, MTV has provided different versions of their identity – from morbid guillotines to sharp and futuristic animation. Here are some videos from the first two decades of MTV: 1980′s The 1980s saw the birth of MTV. It was a milestone, as it became one of the most influential forces both in music and in popular culture. The branding campaign “I want my MTV” became so ubiquitous, different musicians appeared on air to promote MTV. It was also the era where “VJs” or video jockeys became widely popular, with Martha Quinn, one of MTV’s first VJs during the 80s, becoming a well-known personality. During the early part of the ‘80s, most of MTV’s animated IDs were inspired by cartoons, as Fred Seibert, then MTV creative director, put it “Cartoons seemed to be the closest visual equivalent to rock and roll.” Majority of the IDs that were made during the ‘80s used some psychedelic colors and pop culture references, specifically the Apollo 11 mission where still and photographs of the mission were used by MTV as the mark of its beginning. Late in the decade, different styles of animation have been applied to MTV’s IDs. Most of these IDs used clay-mation or stop motion styles to accentuate organic movement or a sense of realism to MTV’s identity. 1990′s The ‘90s saw the decline of hair metal bands and the rise of alternative rock. This is the decade where I grew up and saw bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden rise to fame and challenge rock and roll legends for their fame. Sadly, it’s also the decade where we saw their fall. Much of the ‘90s was made up of angst driven songs, “grunge” guitar lines, and sometimes, unintelligible lyricism. During this era of MTV, the animated identities still flourished and have focused more on stop motion and claymation techniques. These animated identities mostly provided dark and brooding atmospheres to disturbing animations – ranging from decapitations to dark, steampunk-like metamorphoses. The themes of MTV’s identities from this period may have been influenced by the angst driven and apathetic music of the early ’90s. The themes eventually changed as alternative and grunge music waned and paved the way for pop music. Aside from providing groundbreaking animated identities, MTV also provided quality animated series to their subscribers – Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Aeon Flux, Celebrity Deathmatch, etc. These series became cult classics with a strong following even today. These animated series and MTV’s animated identities became the network’s primary asset, second only to the music they showcase. In the past decade (2000-2010), the only redeeming shows that I saw on MTV were Jackass, Viva La Bam, and Wildboyz (which basically had the same people: the CKY crew) which seemed to show some hints of the ‘90s version of MTV – punk attitude and the I-don’t-care-what-they-say philosophy. During the ‘90s it was about the value of entertainment that people received, now, it’s all about the money the network makes. We hope you enjoyed this unique article!
What is guerrilla marketing and why is it a big deal? Guerrilla marketing is packed with creativity and a combination of different ideas to get your message across to the consumers. The big difference between guerrilla marketing and traditional marketing is big budgets. Usually small companies cannot compete with huge retail chains, because they lack financial complications. Let’s say there is a small coffee shop in a little town, and Starbucks just opened up a store nearby. How will the small business owner compete against the coffee giant? By realizing that the marketing budget of Starbucks is way bigger, the small coffee shop owner will have to come up with creative ways to advertise his/her business. This is where creativity comes in, and fights a large sum of money. This problem happens all over the world to the little guys being picked on by the corporate brands, however guerrilla marketing is always there to help! If you are an entrepenuer that has or is about to launch a business, the following examples should get your creativity flowing. As an entrepenuer you are great at analyzing the rights, wrongs, and problems with things. The problem that many people face when starting out is lack of cash, yes this is obvious and very generalized. Many people use it as an excuse for not succeeding, however if you posses creativity nobody can touch you. Without further ado enjoy the following guerrilla marketing campaigns! 1. Global angels: Help someone far away This creative campaign was for one purpose only and that is to end poverty. The undercover actor walks around with bags full of groceries. When he drops them around people that are walking by, this quickly shows how many strangers are willing to help a person in need. Company: Global angels Agency: Lapiz USA, Chicago Country: USA 2. Mountain Dew: Paintball street art What happens when you use paintball guns to create graffiti? Just watch this video and find out, the end results are amazing! Company: Mountain Dew Agency: Redblue Viral Country: United Kingdom 3. Coca-Cola: The wallet of happiness In celebration of Coca-Cola’s 125 years, this guerrilla marketing video shows peoples honesty. If they return the lost wallet to it’s owner, they will be congratulated with a happiness’ welcome. This video was filmed in a crowded district in Lima. The wallet contains $100, let see how many honest people there is shall we? 70% of the people who participated were honest enough to return the stolen wallet. Company: Coca-Cola Agency: McCann Erickson Country: Peru 4. Polish federation of cancer survivors: Shoplifter Well this is a cool way to get women’s attention. This campaign for The Polish Federation of Cancer Survivors won a bronze Lion at the 2011 Cannes advertising festival. The whole point to get across was that women should not only check their breasts for lumps but they should also get a mammogram at a hospital because sometimes: “What a person can miss the machine will find.” This creative campaign consisted of a security tag that would be detected at the entrance of the store. When the alarm would beep the women quickly stopped and looked to see what they had in the bad. How did they manage to get the security tag in their bags after they purchased the clothes? Watch the video and find out! Company: The Polish Federation of Cancer Survivors Agency: EuroRSCG Warsaw Country: Poland 5. WWF: The greenest leaflet WWF created the most greenest ad campaign ever*! With only one copy of the print ad they’ve reached 285,142 people. Check out the video below to see how they achieved this task! Company: WWF Agency: Akcio360, Budapest Country: Hungary 6. Volkswagen: Translator Volkswagen’s park assist sure is a handy feature. Check out how they advertised it in a Brazilian ad. Company: Volkswagen Agency: AlmapBBDO, São Paulo Country: Brazil 7. Nike vs. Adidas Detox Challenge Nike vs Adidas, who will be the first to eliminate hazardous chemical discharges from their supply chain? Company: Greenpeace Agency: Unkown Country: USA 8. The world’s biggest hug How can the statue of Christ the Redeemer at Rio de Janeiro give a hug? Watch this video and find out! This has generated an incredible amount of press and awareness on the serious issue of sexual abuse in Brazil. Company: Conselho Nacional Do Sesi Agency: Monumenta Country: Brazil 9. Doritos: The rise & fall of Esteban Ortega This campaign is extremely creative, and for that we love it! In a matter of two minutes you will witness the rise and fall of Esteban Ortega, who is a professional Dorito flicker. As funny and ridiculous as that sounds, this video is definitely worth a watch. Company: Doritos Agency: AMV BBDO Country: United Kingdom 10. Road safety authority: Loaded weapon Very touching ad, this really makes me think smarter and make wiser decisions while driving or operating a vehicle. Company: Road safety authority Agency: Irish International Country: Ireland

Adidas has become a major leader, by using the celebrity approach for advertising their awesome products. From a marketing perspective this approach is very convincing and makes their clothing very attractive. We decide to create an amazing collection of Addidas artworks & commercials.
TED is a nonprofit organization that transmits “Ideas Worth Spreading.” It all started in 1984 as a talk conference that brought people from three industries: Technology, Entertainment, Design. TED has some of the most inspiring, innovative, and creative people speak about various subjects. Their goal is to keep moving forward and to make the world a better place. What I love most about TED is the fact that there are so many intelligent individuals that try to change the world as we know it for the better. While we just go along with our daily routine and lives, they spend days trying to solve problems that we face as a society. Their website TED.com offers thousands of videos for anybody to watch and enjoy. The ideas that the speakers share are really inspiring and make you want to take action. We decided to share with you some of the most interesting videos in the design field. If you can, I strongly suggest to watch every one of these. For most of them you don’t really have to watch, you can just listen. We hope you will find these ideas inspiring and helpful! 1. Tim Berners-Lee on the next Web 20 years ago, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. For his next project, he’s building a web for open, linked data that could do for numbers what the Web did for words, pictures, video: unlock our data and reframe the way we use it together. He is currently leading the World Wide Web Consortium, and oversees the Web’s standards and development. 2. Rives controls the Internet How many poets could cram eBay, Friendster and Monster.com into 3-minute poem worthy of a standing ovation? Enjoy Rives’ unique talent. 3. Sergey Brin and Larry Page on Google Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin offer a peek inside the Google machine, sharing tidbits about international search patterns, the philanthropic Google Foundation, and the company’s dedication to innovation and employee happiness. 4. Mena Trott on blogs The founding mother of the blog revolution, Movable Type’s Mena Trott, talks about the early days of blogging, when she realized that giving regular people the power to share our lives online is the key to building a friendlier, more connected world. 5. Alexis Ohanian: How to make a splash in social media In a funny, rapid-fire 4 minutes, Alexis Ohanian of Reddit tells the real-life fable of one humpback whale’s rise to Web stardom. The lesson of Mister Splashy Pants is a shoo-in classic for meme-makers and marketers in the Facebook age. 6. Stefan Sagmeister shares happy design Graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister takes the audience on a whimsical journey through moments of his life that made him happy — and notes how many of these moments have to do with good design. 7. Marian Bantjes: Intricate beauty by design In graphic design, Marian Bantjes says, throwing your individuality into a project is heresy. She explains how she built her career doing just that, bringing her signature delicate illustrations to storefronts, valentines and even genetic diagrams. 8. Richard St. John: “Success is a continuous journey” In his typically candid style, Richard St. John reminds us that success is not a one-way street, but a constant journey. He uses the story of his business’ rise and fall to illustrate a valuable lesson — when we stop trying, we fail. 9. Don Norman on 3 ways good design makes you happy In this talk from 2003, design critic Don Norman turns his incisive eye toward beauty, fun, pleasure and emotion, as he looks at design that makes people happy. He names the three emotional cues that a well-designed product must hit to succeed. 10. Milton Glaser on using design to make ideas new From the TED archives: The legendary graphic designer Milton Glaser dives deep into a new painting inspired by Piero della Francesca. From here, he muses on what makes a convincing poster, by breaking down an idea and making it new. 11. Jonathan Harris: the Web’s secret stories Jonathan Harris wants to make sense of the infinite world on the Web — so he builds dazzling graphic interfaces that help us visualize the data floating around out there. Here he presents “We Feel Fine,” a project that scours blogs to collect the planet’s emoti(c)ons, and the “Yahoo! Time Capsule,” which preserves images, quotes and thoughts snapped up in 2006. And he premieres “Universe,” which presents current events as constellations of words — a tag cloud of our collective consciousness. 12. Stefan Sagmeister: The power of time off Every seven years, designer Stefan Sagmeister closes his New York studio for a yearlong sabbatical to rejuvenate and refresh their creative outlook. He explains the often overlooked value of time off and shows the innovative projects inspired by his time in Bali. 13. Rory Sutherland: Life lessons from an ad man Advertising adds value to a product by changing our perception, rather than the product itself. Rory Sutherland makes the daring assertion that a change in perceived value can be just as satisfying as what we consider “real” value — and his conclusion has interesting consequences for how we look at life. 14. Carl Honore praises slowness Journalist Carl Honore believes the Western world’s emphasis on speed erodes health, productivity and quality of life. But there’s a backlash brewing, as everyday people start putting the brakes on their all-too-modern lives. 15. Chris Anderson of WIRED on tech’s Long Tail Chris Anderson, the editor of WIRED, explores the four key stages of any viable technology: setting the right price, gaining market share, displacing an established technology and, finally, becoming ubiquitous. 16. Kevin Kelly on the next 5,000 days of the web Kevin Kelly has been publisher of the Whole Earth Review, exec editor at WIRED, founder of visionary nonprofits, and writer on biology and business and “cool tools. At the 2007 EG conference, Kevin Kelly shares a fun stat: The World Wide Web, as we know it, is only 5,000 days old. Now, Kelly asks, how can we predict what’s coming in the next 5,000 days? 17. Jonathan Zittrain: The Web as random acts of kindness Jonathan Zittrain wants to make sure the electronic frontier stays open — and he’s looking to the Internet’s millions of users for its salvation. Feeling like the world is becoming less friendly? Social theorist Jonathan Zittrain begs to difffer. The Internet, he suggests, is made up of millions of disinterested acts of kindness, curiosity and trust. 18. Evan Williams on listening to Twitter users In the year leading up to this talk, the web tool Twitter exploded in size (up 10x during 2008 alone). Co-founder Evan Williams reveals that many of the ideas driving that growth came from unexpected uses invented by the users themselves. 19. Chris Anderson: How web video powers global innovation TED’s Chris Anderson says the rise of web video is driving a worldwide phenomenon he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation — a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print. But to tap into its power, organizations will need to embrace radical openness. 20. Jacek Utko designs to save newspapers Could good design save the newspaper — at least for now? Jacek Utko thinks so — and his lively, engaging designs for European papers prove that it works. Jacek Utko is an extraordinary Polish newspaper designer whose redesigns for papers in Eastern Europe not only win awards, but increase circulation by up to 100%. Can good design save the newspaper? It just might.

Advertising adds value to a product by changing our perception, rather than the product itself. Rory Sutherland makes the daring assertion that a change in perceived value can be just as satisfying as what we consider “real” value — and his conclusion has interesting consequences for how we look at life.

In the year leading up to this talk, the web tool Twitter exploded in size (up 10x during 2008 alone).
TED’s Chris Anderson says the rise of web video is driving a worldwide phenomenon he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation — a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print. But to tap into its power, organizations will need to embrace radical openness.

Could good design save the newspaper — at least for now? Jacek Utko thinks so — and his lively, engaging designs for European papers prove that it works. Jacek Utko is an extraordinary Polish newspaper designer whose redesigns for papers in Eastern Europe not only win awards, but increase circulation by up to 100%. Can good design save the newspaper? It just might.
