When Google first introduced Google+ to the world less than 2 years ago, many people thought Google was entering the social game too late. Many argued that Google would not be able to take a significant enough portion of the social pie from the already immensely popular Facebook and Twitter to stay relevant. To all those that doubted the longevity of Google+, it may be of interest to note that Google+ just surpassed 500 million total users. To put that number in perspective, the current total population of the United States is just 315 million people.

The new kid on the block is definitely here to stay, so if you’re not on Google+, it’s probably time to join. The Google+ platform with such features as Google circles and communities help you connect with others that share your same interest and passions, engage in meaningful conversations, and establish valuable business relationships. Although Google+ has so much to offer, it can also be a little overwhelming. To help make your time on Google+ more effective as well as enjoyable, here are some great websites to really get you going on Google+.

1. FindPeopleOnPlus.com

This is an incredible tool for finding the perfect people for you to follow and interact with on Google+. You can search for people on G+ by school, occupation, employer, age range, location, relationship status, as well as many other great search filters. In addition to finding new people, you can also discover all your current LinkedIn connections and Twitter followers that are on G+ and quickly connect with them.

Another great feature about FindPeopleOnPlus is that you can apply multiple search filters to your search to really narrow down the selection of people you want to follow. For example, I can search for people that are single, between the ages of 25 to 34, attended or currently attend Harvard University, and work as designers.

2. Recommended Users

Like FindPeopleOnPlus, Recommended Users also allows you to search for people to follow on G+ based on their occupation/area of expertise. However, I prefer Recommended Users to FindPeopleOnPlus when it comes to searching for people based on occupation. The reason being that the results displayed on FindPeopleOnPlus aren’t sorted by the top G+ users in that particular occupation.

If I search for “web designer” for example, the results displayed on FindPeopleOnPlus seem to be ordered more by the number of times the word “web designer” appears in that particular person’s profile. Recommended Users, on the other hand, lists only the top influencers in that particular field such as the list of top web designers to follow on Google+ below. Recommended Users find the top influencers for you instead of you having to sort through and pick them out yourself.

3. Social Statistics

Social Statistics provides valuable insight when it comes to researching who and what is currently trending on G+. This site shows the top 100 people on G+ by number of followers as well as the top 5 “Risers” and “Fallers.” If you see someone that has gained a lot of followers recently, you can check out their recent posts and interactions to see how they may be gaining the followers they are. By the same token, you can also check out those that lost a lot of followers to see what they did wrong.

Social Statistics also displays the hottest posts on G+. This information can help shed some light on what type of topics people want to read and hear about in your particular industry or area of interest. This way you can focus on content that people are likely to +1, comment on, and share.

4. Circle Count

Like the other sites mentioned above, Circle Count also allows you to view the most followed profiles on G+, but Circle Count has some additional unique and interesting statistics worth noting as well. For example, you can view the most followed communities on G+ to see what type of content they are posting. Below is a snapshot of the most followed communities on G+ right now.

There are statistics on the pages and communities with the most user engagement measured by the average comments per posting, number of reshares per posting, and +1’s per posting. In addition to other great statistics like this, there is a unique list of “Specials” with a lot of interesting information you won’t find anywhere else. From great G+ infographics to the newest shared circles on G+ and many other things in between, this area of Circle Count is definitely worth checking out.

G+ is a very unique platform with many social opportunities and features to both excite and capitalize on. As you continue to explore and interact in the world of G+, hopefully these great resources mentioned above will help you truly harness and benefit from the power of G+.

What other great websites or tools out there do you use with Google+?

Rooted in man’s consciousness is the notion of survival. Indeed, this has been the central principal of existence ever since man first came on the scene hundreds of thousands of years ago. But while the caveman’s primary concerns were animal attacks and harsh elements, modern survival takes on a whole new meaning.

Indeed, natural disasters still occur regularly, but knowledge has given man the tools he needs to thrive in various emergency scenarios. And technology builds on this knowledge, providing man with another tool in the tool belt in which to survive a disaster. Even Dan Woolley, a survivor of the Haiti earthquake, credits mobile survival apps with helping to save his life.

So with that in mind, here are some of the top survival apps currently on the market.

Army Survival Guide — $1.99

The U.S. Army does two things well: combat and survival. Therefore it is wise to heed their advice regarding the latter. This can be done quickly and efficiently via this digital survival manual right from the U.S. Army. And this field manual covers it all. It offers info on how to start multiple types of fires, creating shelters, how to identify medicinal and edible plants and much, much more. It offers survival tips for almost any environment, including the desert, forest, tropics and ocean.

American Heart Association’s Pocket First Aid and CPR – $1.99

This is one of the mobile apps that Dan Woolley credits with helping to keep him alive while trapped underneath rubble in Haiti. This app offers offline functionality, which means users can access its data when out of signal range. It provides a host of instructions for various processes, including CPR, breaks, bruises, bites, seizures and more. It even offers tips on what to do in the even of diabetic emergencies. One other useful feature is that it stores the user’s medical info for easy access by any rescue personnel once they arrive on the scene.

SAS Survival Guide – free (lite version), $6.99 (premium)

Britain’s Special Air Service knows a thing or two about survival because they are the country’s most elite fighting forces. Another field-manual app, this option offers everything from photo galleries to how to survive in extreme climates. It even comes with a Morse Code signaling device and sun compass.

GoToAID – free (lite version) $4.99 (premium)

One of the most comprehensive survival apps around, GoToAID offers audio narration of step-by-step instructions on hundreds of topics. These topics are broken down into 10 categories which makes searching for a certain subject a breeze. The app covers everything from CPR and first aid to bee stings and tornado emergencies. The app also allows the user to send their GPS coordinates to up to three different people.

Bear Grylls: Bear Essentials — $6.99

This is the other app John Woolley credits with helping to save his life. Created by Man vs. Wild’s Bear Grylls, the host himself shares survival tips gleaned from service in the British Special Forces as well as his multiple expeditions into some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. The app covers everything from how to trap wild animals to how to build a fire and find water.

With these survival apps locked and loaded, there are few things mother nature can throw at the average smartphone user that he or she won’t be prepared for. And just like in the case of John Woolley, one or two of these apps just might help save a life someday.

You can create automated follow-ups for when this happens, avoiding the task of manually sending reminders to each client.

Simply Invoices

As the name suggests, its interface is simple and clean and boasts all the features you’d expect from a free package, such as customer and product databases, reports and tax rates. It’s a straight to the point invoicing solution, with its main downside being the lack of online payment support.

What Is IFTTT?

IFTTT (If This Then That) is a fantastic free tool that lets you connect web services so they can talk to each other.

It works like this-

Real Life Examples

To make it easier to understand let me give you some real life examples of how to use the tool-

1. Every time you update your Twitter picture, your Facebook picture gets updated
2. Every time you publish a blog post, a backup gets saved in Evernote/Dropbox
3. Every time your tagged in a photo on Facebook, it gets saved to Google Drive

They are just a few examples of how you can use IFTTT.

It is actually compatible with a huge range of services that you can connect together and make your own ‘recipes’ like the examples above.

Creating Your First IFTTT Recipe

After you have registered for the site you can create your first recipe.

In this example I’m going to show you how I automatically backup my blog posts to Evernote. So every time an RSS feed is updated, we want to make a copy to Evernote.

First of all click Create Recipe and you’ll see something like this-

Just click on This and you will be asked to pick your trigger channel.

Select Feed from the list and then New Feed Item – you should see something like this-

Now just paste in the RSS feed URL from the blog you want to automatically backup and click on Create Trigger

Next click on That and select Evernote > Create a note

You should see something like this-

As you can see I have told it to create a new note in the ‘Blog Backup’ notebook.

You can leave everything else at default (add tags if you wish) and then click Create Action

The final step is to double check everything is setup as you wish and to give it a description-

Once you are happy just click on Create Recipe and you’re done! Voila!

Now every time you publish a new post, a backup will automatically appear in Evernote!

How I Use IFTTT

So now you know how to use IFTTT and understand just how powerful it can be I wanted to show you some real examples of how I use it on my blog.

Content Creation

I publish 2 popular posts on my blog every month, one is the income report round up and the other is what I have read this month.

Income Report Roundup

This post is a just a ranking of blogs that have published income reports the previous month along with a few notes of how they did it.

Instead of hunting down these posts every month I have created a few IFTTT recipes that automatically downloads the income reports into an Evernote notebook as soon as they are published.

So when I come to writing the post all I have to do is look at the ‘Income Reports’ notebook in Evernote and all the information I need is right at my fingertips saving me about 30 minutes of manual digging!

What I Have Read This Month

This post is just my way of sharing all of my favourite internet marketing related posts from the last month.

I have all of my favourite RSS feeds setup with Google Reader and then created this recipe-

So every time I star an item in Google Reader, it gets copied to the ‘Reading List’ notebook in Evernote.

I also have the Evernote web clipper installed on my web browser so I can easily save other articles to that notebook as well as I’m browsing.

Social Media Archiving

If you engage on social media it is always great to have a backup of it all. Twitters searchable archives only go back a week or so but IFTTT can help us out with that!

You can create a recipe for each social network that will automatically backup any status updates/photos that are posted to your backup service of choice.

That could be Dropbox, Google Drive or Evernote!

Other Uses

Quite a lot of IFTTT users choose to share their recipes so others can use them as well.

Here are a few that stood out-

• Thank someone for following you on Twitter
• Change your Facebook picture & automatically update your Twitter picture
• When tagged in a photo on Facebook, copy it to Dropbox
• When a new top 100 free eBook is available, send me an email

1. Wikipedia

The most comprehensive free encyclopedia is now offline. You can browse different topics, look at pictures and find definitions very easily. Don’t forget to check the references in order to make sure that the information is credible since Wikipedia is rather an educational and not an academic project.

2. Wolfram Alpha

It was created in 2009 as an answer engine. It provides an answer to any possible question from various fields through calculation of structured information. Wolfram alpha isn’t similar to Google search; it is actually a new tool that could be used to analyze information in a prompt manner. Interestingly enough, now you can even create statistics for your own Facebook profile. The only disadvantage is that this app is not free and can be bought for $3.

3. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary

This is one of the most popular dictionaries with a very long tradition dating back to the 19^th century. It is completely offline. You are able to check your spelling, search for synonyms and antonyms, listen to the pronunciation of each word, etc. It also provides examples of sentences for each word.

4. Kindle for Android

Created by Amazon.com, Kindle is the modern way to read classical books. You can also  read magazines and newspapers there. Kindle allows you to read The Economist besides The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne, Politics by Aristotle, War and Peace by Tolstoy, no matter where you are. There is a build-in dictionary as well, besides many more functions.

5. Virt U: The Virtual University

This is on of the best apps to browse a wide range of academic lectures (provided even at Harvard or Berkeley) in any possible field. You could search for some topic, add it to your favorite lectures and then download and watch. The social dimension of the app is also very well developed: you are able to connect with your classmates, follow their reading activities, comment lectures together with them, ask questions or provide answers on the forums. The previous version of Virt U required you to log in to a Facebook account; now it is just one of the options.

6. World Atlas

It is always useful to know more about different countries in the world, whatever you are studying. World atlas contains much more than just the countries officially recognized by the UN (because many dominant territories have been included). Easy for navigation, it proposes facts about all countries and their capitals, maps, travel info, and even quizzes. If you want to use maps, you should install Google maps on your device.

Despite some discrepancies and obvious mistakes (e.g., Cyprus is located in… Asia; Southern Sudan is excluded), World Atlas seems to be quite an appropriate application to use in your studying or just for satisfying your curiosity.

7. Algebra Tutor

Are you worried about your mathematical abilities? Do you often forget how to conduct complicated mathematical operations, like exponentiating exponents or converting decimal notation to scientific notation? Then Algebra Tutor is just for you, because it not only makes calculations for you, but also teaches what to do, why and when. Certainly, it is the app that every natural science or engineering student should have.

8. Cam Scanner- Phone PDF creator (incompatible with tablets)

One of the main activities of every student is scanning documents (lectures, notes), isn’t it? If you don’t have a scanner or a fax machine, you can still scan your documents through this very useful app. Besides scanning, there are also other useful functions such as color enhancement, creating PDF, etc.

There are two disadvantages of this app though. First, it isn’t compatible with tablets; second, there is a more advanced version, which is paid. Notwithstanding, teachers and students can use the full version freely.

If you don’t have a smartphone, there is another option: an app called Mobile Doc Scanner Lite, although it is not as good as Cam Scanner.

9. Physics Reference

Finally, let’s briefly analyze two science apps. The first one deals with main concepts, principles, and theories in Physics. It teaches you some useful material, and also checks your knowledge, from gravitation to quantum mechanics.

10. Chem Doodle Mobile

Another application is related to Chemistry. With the help of it, you are able draw chemical structures, calculate properties, etc. It also helps you calculate molecular formulate, molecular mass, average molecular polarizability, and so on.

Again, there is one disadvantage, requiring a ChemDoodle’s account, which costs $70; there are some discounts for students ($35), but comes with restricted functions and is limited to a 1 year period. Without this account you can only draw, without saving your drawings.

There are also many other apps related to popular science (e.g. Nasa app, Google sky, etc.). You may use the list provided above as a starting point only to search for your own apps (the most appropriate for your goals). Good luck!

1. AT&T U-verse Live TV

This is among the most popular apps to watch television on the go. Unlike most such apps, this is not exclusive to U-verse customers. This is a subscription based application that is available to everyone. It does not only allow live streaming but also has shows available on demand from channels including Comedy Central, MTV, ESPN, Disney Channel and Fox Sports. The app works on Wi-Fi as well as over 3G and 4G.

2. Cartoon Network

One of the most famous applications for viewing cartoons on an iPhone is Cartoon Network. Famous titles like Ben 10, The Looney Tunes Show and Thunder Cats are available on it. However, this application is only available to users who enjoy the channel on their cable service. It requires log in information that comes with a cable account. This way the atmosphere is conducive for innovation, better codes and more competition with better results.

Furthermore, the fact that Drupal has been around for a long time has increased its community base largely and there are many experts of the platform today. Seeking community support and getting immediate response is not a big deal really. Views

Last but above all, Views, a famous Drupal module, is an incredibly smooth solution to how things can be viewed on Drupal.
