Writing a novel is tough. It takes hundreds of hours of dedication and requires intense focus. It is a daunting task for anyone, but it is certainly not impossible. Writing a novel can be wonderfully rewarding once it is all over and you’re ready to publish.

However, it can be a bit of a pain to get started, especially if there is a lot of pressure on you. If you are struggling to get started writing your novel then consider the tips below.

1. Take the Pressure Off Yourself

Realize that not every word you write has to be perfect right off the bat. Many people never get words down on the page because they are paralyzed in their search for the perfect word or phrase. Take the pressure off yourself and reassure yourself that nothing must be perfect immediately.

Revisions are a necessary part of the process, and anything you write can be changed until you are happy with it. You will not be able to move forward if there is nothing on the page, so do not be afraid to write things down even if you aren’t completely satisfied. Writing is a process, no one writes a Pulitzer Prize-winning work in the first draft. Be easy on yourself!

2. Create a Routine for Yourself

Writing takes discipline. You need to train yourself to be ready to write. A solid way to start is to schedule an allotted time for writing every day.

You could start with just 30 minutes of dedicated writing time each day and slowly increase it every week or month. This ensures that you make steady progress and it will also help you to take your writing more seriously. Try your best not to allow this time to be interrupted or canceled. The more time you invest in yourself and your craft the more likely you will be able to create a quality product.

3. Always Keep a Journal with You

Keeping a journal or notepad in your pocket or backpack is a great idea. You never know when inspiration will strike. You may be sitting idly on the bus when you suddenly realize what your main character’s name should be.

Be ready to capture your ideas before they fade away! It is important not to assume that you will remember things that come to you because people get easily distracted. Write down anything and everything because you never know what might be useful to you when you get stuck with a bout of writer’s block.

The more you can integrate writing into your daily life the more comfortable it will be for you, and the sooner you will be able to finish your novel!

4. Use a Proofreading Software

Once you start getting some words on the page, consider utilizing a proofreading software to take your work to the next level. One popular site that can be used either for free or for a small monthly fee for an upgraded version is Grammarly.

Grammarly is excellent for catching those pesky typos that spellchecker leaves behind. It also gives suggestions for more unique and precise words to use to improve the flavor of your writing. For more information about the program check out a review of Grammarly to see if it may be helpful for you.

Writing a novel does not have to be a scary task. If you are willing to put in the time and effort, then there is no reason you will not be successful in this endeavor.

Often the hardest part of the process is just getting started. Once you have started to get some words down on paper, you will likely hit your stride and breeze through the rest of the process. Hopefully, the above tips will help you to overcome the roadblock of getting started and begin writing the novel you have always dreamed of in your head.
