It’s extremely hard to find a job these days! The market is slow, the economy is bad, and the competition has never been so fierce. To get a job you will have to out do the competition and stand out of the crowd. The following resumes go against everything my business teacher has taught me. She told us never to provide a picture of yourself on the resume, and never have any kind of clip art or icons. Please keep in mind that if you apply to companies that have nothing to do with the design field, they wont appreshiate your artfulness. What they want to see is a plain and boring white paper that has your experience, awards, education, and info in black ink.

However, I think if you are in the design field you need to show off your creativity. The employer will go through hundreds of resumes, so you have to demonstrate that you can think out side the box. For this exact reason you should take some time and perfect your resume. Once its finished, you will have it saved and ready to print whenever the opportunity strikes! To help you out on this mission we have collected some of the best designer resumes we could find. We hope these inspirations will get your creativity fluids flowing.

Resume is a French word that means summing up. A resume packages your assets into a convincing advertisement that sells you. The main purpose of the resume is to win the interview. Thus beating the competition for the job you are applying for. Two critical aspects of a resume is appearance and content. Below we have compiled a useful guide to follow when working on your resume. The tips can be use for both, a professional and design based resume.

Experience (Appropriate Volunteer Work)

Important Resume elements:

Cleanly & clearly typed or typeset
Logically and simply organized
Simply laid out, with as much white space as the information will allow
Short and concise
Targeted to the prospective employer
Designed to emphasize strengths and de-emphasize weaknesses
In format that is most appropriate to the education, experience and skills of each person

Remember: Stay away from being boring and try to tackle this task creatively.

These are all really, really bad as resumes, and a lot of them are bad from a graphic design point of view. Don’t encourage people to turn in resumes like this.

How about this a example of resumes from people that ACTUALLY GOT HIRED.
You have a portfolio that is what it is for to show your work I see nothing wrong with the idea to show what you can do and creative marketing (in this case of yourself) is a huge part of what a creative director, art director or designer does. This is NOT a example for everyone looking for a job it is about getting a creative position. BUT… that said at many corporate positions some HR manager does the weeding out and not someone in the creative department and then go though Resumes (sometime not even a human when it comes to sorting electronically submitted resumes) looking for key words and through out those that do not meet that initial screening. Unfortunately the job market today has become very impersonal. Not just in finding a job but keeping the one you have. BUT Still the best way to get a job is networking, most job openings are not even posted and most times filled from within the same company or small circle of associates or that company. (the best jobs in particular all ready have a replacement lined up before the person who had it before even leaves) Remember most of the time you are going to be getting the job that some else had yesterday. In today’s market the number of truly new positions created is VERY few. And most people that get hired for higher level positions are not hired from the ranks of the unemployed they are recruited from people currently working. I know it is hard to hear this when you are a mid level career person who was just laid off that your chances of finding your next great position just went down when you lost your job but it is true and the longer it takes to find the text the worse it gets. Everyone wants to hire the best and if it is a dream job you can expect it even more likely someone VERY good that is currently doing great job will be their first choice. THink about what do top sports teams do when they need immediate success? the buy a already successful player from another team then they may bring in young talent as well but that is a bigger gamble they are unproven and last resort is the washed up free agent that no one has picked up yet. I know very pessimistic out look but SO TRUE in many ways.
