If you are looking for some free stock footage, the following websites are a great place to start. We collected only the best resources, assuring you that the video clips were created by video design professionals. You can use these video clips absolutely free. Some do require a mention or a link back to their website, but most do not. We hope they will help you with your video productions. Enjoy!

Burst

Burst offers free stock photos for entrepreneurs, powered by Shopify. The photos are offered under the Creative Commons Zero (CCO) license. This means you can use the photos for any purpose, business included. Use the images for you website, blog, online store, backgrounds for school projects, social media campaigns, client work, and beyond.

 

Movie Tools.info

If you require graphic, video and background elements, then Movie Tools.info can help. Their range is from fantasy to technical and allows great title backgrounds. An added bonus is their video loop selection.

Krisha Creationz

With a large selection of background graphic elements and digital jump jacks, Krisha Creationz is an excellent site. The search options allow you to select by type or category. A log in is required prior to use. The majority of free clips are in SD.

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Videos is a category found at Wikimedia Commons. The search functionality is rather limited, and it may take some time to find what you require; however, it does have a large selection of video clips, sound sources, and photos.

Hollywood Camerawork Greenscreen

For experimenting and honing your composition skills, Hollywood Camerawork Greenscreen is excellent. The site comprises of a great set of green screen plates – enabling individuals and educators to experiment.

iMovies

Utilizing iconic public domain movies, iMovies enables you to download them. Topics include sci-fi horror and B movie classics.

Vids Play

Vids Play offers clips in both HD720; however, the range is small and the majority depicts flowers and beach settings. Fortunately there are free vintage movie clips on offer, but you may need to convert the AVI format for use in Final Cut Pro.

The News Market

For journalistic or documentary selection, The News Market is a great source of prepackaged news pieces in newsworthy and topical subjects. Some clips have the added bonus of having shot lists added.

Archive.org

With an extensive stock of Americana and cultural based movies, Archive.org has over 2,000 movies to choose from. The majority are sourced from the ‘Prelinger Archive’, which is on the site. With the selection from the last 100 years, you will find a wealth of digital media to choose from here. One tip: check the license prior to use.

Detonation Films

If explosions, blood splatters or smoke streams are your thing, then take a look at Detonation Films. With some effects pre-keyed for ease of use, most are 4×3 (SD) but can be integrated into a HD frame. With a wide range of video clips such as muzzle flashes, bullet hits and fireballs, you are sure to find the effect you are looking for.

X Stock Video

Although the variety is limited, X Stock Video does offer free high resolution clips. The search link is the best way to find your required clip. Resolutions are in HD720 and 1080.

Footage Firm

Footage Firm has a wide variety of graphics and videos to choose from. Although this site’s stock footage is not exactly free, it is a great resource. Once you have made your selection they mail a DVD to you so shipping and handling is a component of your clip, although the clip itself is free.

Videezy

Videezy allows members to share HD stock videos, b-roll, and backgrounds under a creative commons license, or public domain. It is free to join and the HD stock video clips are listed by category.

OpenFootage.net

If you require time lapse footage, then OpenFootage.net has a good range of items for free and simple downloading. There are also some interesting .jpegs available.

EpicSlowmo.com

For slow motion clips, Epic Slowmo.com has a free clips link offering footage for use commercially or privately. New clips are added every Monday and Thursday, so this is a great site to bookmark.

Stock Footage for Free

Available in HD broadcast quality the footage from Stock Footage for Free has an impressive library of clips with a user-friendly format of topics that can be found quickly and easily. From animals to looping backgrounds to time-lapse… you have a vast choice.

Motion Elements

With around 400 videos for downloading, Motion Elements front page has clips clearly displayed. Each icon has the word ‘free’ on the bottom right corner for clarification. New clips are loaded every week.

Vimeo.com

If you require HD footage then visit Vimeo.com. Originally founded by a group of filmmakers sharing their creative work, it soon became a supportive community of likeminded people.

Movie Tools

Movie Tools enables you to download 2D and 3D animated backgrounds, animations and videos. The site also has an extensive stock of loops and lower thirds.

Clipcanvas.com

An array of images are displayed on the front page of Clipcanvas under the free footage tag. Once you click one it takes you to the item in motion and details of the clip itself.

Cute Stock Footage

With sound effects and quality stock videos, Cute Stock Footage is a premium source of footage. Clips are located under the top menu ‘free’ dropdown.
