Error 404 pages show up usually because of a misspelled, or deleted url. When this happens the ugly 404 page shows up, and scares the visitors away. You probably wonder ‘how can i fix this, without manually messing with the php code?’ To help you, we have looked around and found the best WordPress 404 plugins around. Check out the plugins and find the one that suits your needs the best. If you would like to get some inspiration before you make your 404 page check this out 40 Creative 404 Pages.

1. 404 SEO Plugin

Give yourself an SEO boost! This simple plugin will give you a customized, smart ‘Page Not Found(404)’ error message. It will automatically display links to relevant pages on your site, based on the words in the URL that was not found. Installing this plugin is beneficial for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) because it will make your site appear to have relevant pages even for those URLs that you actually don’t have. This can increase your search engine ranking.

2. Google 404

The Google 404 widget is a quick and easy way to embed a search box on your custom 404 page and provide users with useful information designed to help them find the information they need. Where it can, the Google widget will also suggest other ways for the user to find the information they need, thus increasing the likelihood that they’ll continue to explore your site.

3. Smart 404

When a page cannot be found, Smart 404 will use the current URL to attempt to find a matching page, and redirect to it automatically. Smart 404 also supplies template tags which provide a list of suggestions, for use on a 404.php template page if a matching post can’t be immediately discovered.

4. 404 Notifier

If you’ve decided to move things around on your site, you might overlook a few redirects and end up with some broken URLs. This will help you catch those so you can take care of them.

5. Redirection Plugin

Redirection is a WordPress plugin to manage 301 redirections, keep track of 404 errors, and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This is particularly useful if you are migrating pages from an old website, or are changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

6. Useful 404s

Create more useful 404 error pages, including email notifications for bad links.

7. JH 404 Logger

JH 404 Logger is a simple WordPress plugin dashboard widget that shows recently visited pages that return 404. The dashboard widget is simple, fast and Ajax powered.

  15. Great post. I learn so much. With my shoes on.

  16. Funny thing with 404 errors is that technically these come through as 304 errors in the logs. WordPress intercepts the non-matching GET request returns the 404 page not found template. As far as logging goes, most will never see the 404 error. At least that’s what I’m seeing.

  17. Good list. Especially interested in the 404 SEO plugin and what the results will be. Any body out there who can share their experiences on this plugin?

  18. Great thats what i was searching for. cheers for share 🙂
