Top 10 Useful Translation Plugins for WordPress

Before we jump into this article, I just would like to share a little backstory that will show you why these plugins must not be overlooked. As any webmaster would be, I’m obsessed with stats and analytics. While looking through google analytics I noticed that more and more people all over the world are visiting my website. I hate to make indefinite assumptions, but I will bet you money not everybody who visits my website knows how to read, write, or speak the English.

Personally I use Google Chrome, I love the browser and consider it the best in the world. Now I don’t want to get into browser war, and argue about who or what is better. The bottom line is that this is based solely on my opinion. Whenever I visit a European website google chrome ask me if i would like the text to be translated to english. While I find this very convenient, I do not know if anybody else is provided with the same experience.

For this exact reason you cannot assume that every single person that stumbledupon your website has the ability to translate your website into their language. Now you can definitely bet some money that people will leave your site is they cannot understand the language, or have no ability to translate. If they are browsing for pleasure, they are not going to waste their time trying to find a solution. I know I would not, so why should they?

Now that you have a clear understanding of why translation tools/plugins should be a vital part of your website. Good tips on WordPress plugins! Another tip: You can search, edit and export to WordPress, blogs, print or web with Markzware PageZephyr.

What about the GTranslate plugin in wordpress,
    Downloads: 1,340,278
although its a bit time consuming but it converts your text between 58 languages (more than 98% of internet users), I guess worth a try!

  3. Hello Igor,

Nice post. But you may have left out the GTS plugin which you can read more about on http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gts-translation/

I think that our plugin is one of the best out there. It is guaranteed to increase traffic and ad revenues. It is also
one of the only plugins that does not rely on the Google API. Google is terminating the free translate API this year
and most of the plugins that rely on Google will not be able to offer all of those languages. Our system is based on
a self-owned server and software license and we are not dependent on anyone.

We are looking for successful blogs to partner with us and use our plugin to evaluate the effectiveness of the solution. Please contact me for more details.

BTW you can check some of the software implemented in our plugin on http://webtranslator.gts-translation.com

I used to use WPML, but that’s a commercial plugin now and I didn’t tried the commercial version yet. For a lot of projects I use qTranslate: it’s free and very easy to use.
Another plugin I used for a while is GTranslate. The free version works perfect (don’t know about the commercial version).

The Global Translator plugin! DO NOT INSTALL!!!I had over 16,500 unreachable 503 errors because of the plugin with over 2 gigs of drive space allotted to the cache!

I had manually remove the directories in webmaster tools, redo the robots.txt file and I was curious as to why my rank was dropping month after month… Because GTS is not made all that well… it is a SEO killer plugin.

Check the net for all the people having problems with this plugin… don’t recommend this at all! It certainly should not be in the #1 spot at all!

  7. Hey, this is perfect! Thank you for the recommendations. My two cents: I really don’t like gtrans – it looks old, square and clunky. Also, Global Translator and Google AJAX Translation are currently not compatible with 3.* =(. I actually can’t find one that works well with 3.*. I’d love a reply comment if anyone finds a good one. Thanks!

  8. Hi Ben, I found this post useful, but you may want to update it after trying out qTranslate. This plugin makes WordPress very multilingual friendly & is even linked with a professional translation agency Live Translation which displays the price of the translation service in WordPress. It’s compatible with many SEO plugins and is well maintained so it is always compatible with recent releases of WordPress. Check it out :)

  9. THanks a lot ! so useful for me

  10. I really enjoyed reading your article, and the plugins you presented on how to automatically translate wordpress blog..

And as you know, there are many approaches of doing things, if you are looking for the automated
approach, also Google Translate is an amazing option, that helps you get things done in few minutes.

I created this video tutorial that shows how this accomplished, and you can have it setup up fairly quickly, and I go about everything in detail.

All i’m really after is a plugin that allows you to add manual translations. Any recommendations?
Re auto translations…can’t see the point in having thousands of pages that are ‘almost’ in a foreign language. These translations are very far from correct!

  12. Un aporte para tus lectores con respecto al asunto de la traduccion hay un sitio que tiene la capacidad de traducir al mismo tiempo con Google y con Microsoft el sitio es:

    http://www.traductorgoogle.org

De esta forma uno puede elegir la mejor traducción, espero que les sea útil, como herramienta de trabajo.

That’s an interesting one on the Ben’s Translator. I’m looking for a translator that CREATES PAGES / POSTS purely for SEO reasons – to get more traffic and therefore more clicks on my ads. It seems that Bens still doesn’t quite do this – I’m worried it would dilute my SEO keywords in English…
