Gone are the days when websites used to be full of flashy designs to attract users. This is the era of simple and elegant web designs. Many enterprises and organizations today would rather go for neat and compact websites (at times consisting of only a single page), which present the information clearly and concisely to the visitors.

It is not too difficult to build a website which is simple and yet puts its point across with resounding impact. Let’s take a look at some of the elements which are necessary to making simple, yet impressive websites.

1. An impressive layout

The layout of a webpage is an easy way to take you a step closer towards achieving simple web design. There are plenty of online resources that allow you to download and use innovative and highly creative layouts; many of these can be downloaded for free. You can either select from these existing layouts, or create your own layouts as required. Once you are ready with an ‘impact layout’, you can go ahead and use it for your website.

2. Good Typography

A good website is characterized by the use of simple, but smart use of typography.

Generally, in simple websites, the typefaces are restricted to one or two in number and then variations are made in terms of size, color, case, weight etc. It allows you to create a hierarchy in the style-sheets. Remember the fact that using too many typefaces is a major faux pas as it conflicts with one another and creates chaos in the minds of users.

Also, do keep factors like –Kerning (space between characters), Leading (space between lines of text), Letter-spacing and text-to-image-ratio in mind in order to present the information on the site in a clear manner.

3. Keep a check on colors

There are no constraints as such, when it comes to the kind of colors used in websites. But the trend is to use limited colors, especially if you want to give it a professional look. You will find that many sites use grey as the base color and use another color to highlight the important aspects of the site (headlines, titles, links etc.); the font color is usually kept black keeping in mind the comfort factor of the users.

You can also experiment with colors, when the need arises. For instance, you can always use a bright color palette while designing websites meant for kids and teens.

4. Don’t go overboard with graphics

Visitors on any site cannot be bothered by the sight of too many graphics at once. Also, it can irk them when the style of presenting images such as photo, info graphics, charts or illustrations within the web pages are not consistent.

Thus, keep the style of the images uniform, so that no page looks out of place to the users. You must keep the depth, light and similar aspects in-sync and make sure that the image is suitable for the content. Also, do maintain the text-to-image-ratio across all the pages in your website.

Make it a habit starting from today; to incorporate the above mentioned elements in your next website to make it simple and elegant.
