To put it simply, urban decay is the process of disrepair and decrepitude. What was previously a fully functioning city, or part of a city, is now an abandoned piece of space. A famous example of this is Chernobyl, Ukraine. The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe.
Chernobyl was recently opened to adventure hungry tourists and journalist. Personally I’ll pass on the radiation, however seeing the images of the disaster brings swift sadness to the viewer and spreads sorrow through their nerve system. Also mysterious images of abandonment reminds most people of what a post apocalyptic world, let’s knock on wood it never happens, would look like.
For photographers, taking these types of photographs gives them an adrenaline rush. The is just something sceptical about visiting places that haven’t seen a living soul in quite sometime. Most photographers use urban exploration to their advantage to illustrate hope or gruesome terror. As the title suggests, here are forty chilling photographs of urban decay. Enjoy!
