Before you release your own creativity and start working on your project, it is very important to consider your work space. Having one that allows you to work freely and to think creatively, will totally improve your workflow. Each setup plays an important role in helping a designer finish their work successfully. Some simple tips can lead you to doing your best! As you progress throughout different jobs, these five tips will help you take charge.
1. Organization
First of all, you need to clean and organize the area where you are going to work. Disorganization and clutter can be a constant battle in your workspace, if you do not have a system to manage it. Clean the desktop of anything you do not use or need anymore. Set up a time each week/month where you are going to clean. Try to get “all at your fingertips”, easy to find. You don’t really have to spend hours looking for contracts, briefs, books, sketches, phone-numbers or risk to lose potential clients. Organize your desk, get a shelf and containers where you can keep papers, meanwhile the storage features of your desk regularly.
Check often to make sure there are no unused papers as well as files or other items that can make drawers or cabinets needlessly full. Leave a spot for your sketches, notes, brainstorming ideas, and of course a coffee mug. Get an L-shape or a L-wing into your desk if you can. The wing makes it so much easier to keep your primary desk area clear for active work. This is handy as well for storing your desktop files or other frequently grabbed items off to the side. Also if you are someone who prints daily, then of course you need a printer very close at hand.
2. Resources
Choose your resources carefully, and be sure that you have everything you possibly need. It is very important for a designer to be surround by his favorite tools. Get a library and buy lots books; it can be your “starting point” the place where you can begin searching and thinking about your projects. Try to get as many books as you can, and search for a large variety. Contact the manufacturer of publication and don’t hesitate to ask for free samples in order to always be updated. Read the news and stay updated to your industry. Create a stock folder of pictures, vectors, and photo gallery, brushes, icons, fonts, and anything else you think will be useful for quick access in the future.
3. Creativity Spot
Your ideal workspace has to be as creative as possible in order to mine your brain for golden ideas. Keep/store samples of your work, design, and artworks. Accumulate inspirational wall posters, photography, and quotes that will motivate you through visual encouragement. Get your wall paint, choose a neutral shade with a touch of color may be to your benefit. Hand-pick a color that suits your personality, and carries a special meaning. Keep around cool/fancy gadgets like pencil sharpeners, rubbers, paperclips, and pens.
4. Comfortable/Quiet
Choose a quiet place. Go through every room in your home and ask yourself whether an office could be integrated into the space. Utilize closets, see if you can convert into an office. Obviously try not to chose a noisy/busy spot. The room you select should be comfortable and provide you with common necessities. It’s annoying to be interrupted when you are in the thick of a project, especially if you have a family or roommates, staying out of the loop is quite critical.Look around and find out what is going to best suit your productivity needs. Reduce to zero your distractions.
One other element that has a large impact on the overall appearance of your space but is often overlooked, is lighting. You should try to incorporate two sources of light into your room – an overhead light as well as a task light. If you prefer a natural feel and have access to it, natural lighting can do wonders to improve your mood in addition to providing the light you need to get the task done. Extra seating can also be highlighted by a floor lamp. You can express your personality through lighting with a large variety of modern styles.
Get a very comfortable chair, think that probably you are going to work between 8-10 hours a day, and you do not have to end up with a backache. Your back is very important. You need to take good care of it while your young, so it does not come around and haunt you at an older age. Yes great office chairs are expensive, but think of it as a ten or more year investment. Office chair are know to last for ages, unless you don’t take good care of them. Another great idea is to get a stand-up desk that can adjust for a sitting and standing position. Burning calories/fostering your back is quite intelligent.
5. Personalizing your work area
Remember that your workspace is your living space for much of your day, so make it livable and not just workable. Personalize it, make it a reflection of your own personality. Photographs are an easy way to personalize your space, it can also remind you that you are not alone. Add plants, they are a wonderful way to add life to a workspace; a specifically kind of plant can reflect your personality and best suit with that. Put an aquarium, play your favorite music so you can reduce the stress. There are multiple ways and things you can attack this. You are a creative, think outside the box!
