With an iPad there’s not much you can’t do. You can take photos, write documents, and more so it makes sense that you might need to print something occasionally. Here are some of the best options available if you’re in the market for a printing app for your iPad.
Air Sharing HD
Released in 2010, this app lets you print directly from your iPad to any printer attached to a Wi-Fi network for Mac computers. Now it can’t print the files you have saved on your device but it can print documents and photos through servers, such as your email account or MobileMe. That may sound like a big drawback but it can be worked around simply by emailing the document in question to yourself then sending it to the printer.
This app definitely has some flaws that may be corrected in future updates but it is one of the best options available for printing from your iPad without the use of a specific printer.
The app is currently available for $3.99 on iTunes.
ePrint
This app was originally designed for the iPhone but is compatible with the iPad, too. It is also a versatile printing choice. You can print web pages, cards, and pages from your calendar, and more using this app. Another nice feature is the easy of set up. The printer you want to use can be detected through the app or you can enter its IP address. Either way, it works quickly and produces pretty good quality documents.
The downside is that ePrint may not work reliably with all printers. You may want to download the free version of the app to check its compatibility with your current printer before shelling out $2.99 for the full version.
DocPrinter
This app offers a wide range of printing options. For example, you can print from documents stored in the cloud or photos on your iPad. The only item you can’t print are emails. You’d need another app to do that. Another benefit of this app is that you can use any printer by going through either your Mac computer or your PC. You also have the option of printing to most of the Wi-Fi printers on the market without having to go through the computer.
The drawback is that it’s not as easy to use as you might think. You can’t just open a file, hit print and then be done. You have to first add the file you want to print to the app then you can print. While this extra step might seem inconvenient, it shouldn’t add much time to the process.
The app is available through iTunes for $5.99.
Print Magic
Of all the printing apps on iTunes, Print Magic seems to have the highest ratings from customers. That’s a good sign. It’s also the most affordable at only $0.99.
But price is only one factor. The app prints to most Wi-Fi printers directly. Currently, they have support for over 1,000 printers and you can view the list of these printers at the Wellala website. Even if your printer isn’t supported, you can download a free app onto your PC that will let you print to any printer connected to that printer.
As with most of these apps, you do have to add the content to the app before being able to print it. However, if you want to print PDFs then you’ll need to pay an extra $1.99 for the upgrade to your app. Even with the addition, you’ll be paying less than you would for the competing apps.
