The Jeter’s were a baseball family, as Derek’s father once played for Fisk University as a shortstop. As such, Derek and his sister vacationed with their grandparents and attended many Yankees games. It was there that he fell in love with the game, thanks in part to Dave Winfield’s performance on the field. It was Winfield that inspired Derek to go pro.
Derek’s career began as early as in high school where he put on an impressive performance with the Kalamazoo Central High School baseball team. He played baseball in the spring, ran cross-country in the summer, and played basketball in the winter.
Derek received many awards after his senior baseball season, including the American Baseball Coaches Association’s Player of the year award. After his senior season, Derek earned a baseball scholarship at the University of Michigan to play for their college team.
Jeter later made the decision to go pro when the Yankees approached him with an offer during the 1992 MLB draft. He started his career in the minor leagues, playing with the Gulf Coast Yankees at the rookie level. Jeter’s career didn’t exactly hit the floor running, as he struggled with a low batting average of 0.202 in 47 games.
He focused up and slowly but surely, improved his performance during the following off-season. His early career was rocky, but he finally got a chance to show his potential in the majors, starting as the shortstop for the Yankees in 1996.
And thus began Jeter’s long and successful career as the shortstop for the New York Yankees. Together with the team, he went on to win five World Series titles, five silver slugger awards, and five golden glove awards.
Jeter played his final season in 2014, during which he was honored by the fans and his fellow players for his contribution during twenty years of play. Derek Jeter received a standing ovation from Red Sox fans after his final at-bat, and that day will forever be remembered in baseball history.
In 2017, the Yankees retired Jeter’s number 2 uniform and installed a plaque in his honor at Monument park. He was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in 2020, as soon as he was eligible, with a 99.7 vote percentage, second only to Mariano Rivera.
Jeter is happily married with three children and while he is no longer an active Major league player, his contribution to the game will never be forgotten.
