Little did she know that seventeen years later, she would be the center of attraction for the myriad of viewers who follow the show.

Early Life and Career Information
Ellen was the last child of her catholic parents, Joseph and Kathleen Pompeo, who raised her alongside her five elder siblings. When she was five, her mom died from an overdose of painkillers, so she grew up in the arms of her stepmother. Despite this, Ellen described the home as unhappy, citing that as part of her motivations to keep her current home blissful.
After graduating from Everett High School, she moved to Miami, Florida, and began bartending. By 1995, she decided to move to New York City with her boyfriend. She worked as a bartender at the SoHo Bar and Grill when an agent approached her to feature in commercials for L’Oreal and Citibank. That was her introduction to the big screen, but much more was to come.
She made her television debut as a guest appearance in the NBC legal police drama series Law and Order in 1996. Her film debut, Coming Soon, followed in 1999. In 2000, She guest-starred in two widely acclaimed sitcoms; Friends and Strangers with Candy. Around the same time, she appeared on some episodes of Strong Medicine. Then she moved to Los Angeles in 2001.
In 2002, she played a lead role in Director Brad Silberling’s film, Moonlight Mile. Jeff Vice of Desert News described her performance in the feature as “extremely appealing.” Others expressed opinions that described it as worthy of an Academy Award.
Ellen was motivated by her quest for success. She continued to star in more movies. Catch Me If You Can, Old School, Daredevil, and Art Heist were the major projects she worked on till 2004, after which her career took a positive turn.
Ellen’s first significant role came in 2005 when she played a role in the ABC medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy. Initially, she didn’t want to take the role. She mainly had been into movies, and the six-year drama series contract seemed restrictive. Eventually, she accepted the contract, partly because she needed the money.
The premiere night was when she realized how big the project could be. “The ratings were through the roof,” Pompeo said. The series immediately became a breakout hit, with various media personalities applauding Ellen’s depiction of Dr. Grey.
As the years went by and the show began to attract viewers globally, Ellen’s salary structure was upgraded upon every contract renewal. In 2012, it was raised to $200,000 per episode, grossing her salary at $9 million and making her the eighth highest-paid TV actress.
It was upgraded to $350,000 per episode in 2013, placing her on the Forbes list as the fourth highest-paid TV actress, which she held till 2015. Now, Ellen Pompeo rakes in a yearly $20 million in salary! That’s a handsome green stack, if you ask me.
The star actress has been a recipient of multiple awards. She was nominated for the People’s Choice Awards five times, out of which she won three. At the 64th Golden Globe awards, she won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series. In addition, she and the female cast and crew of Grey’s Anatomy received the Women in Film Lucy Award.
Ellen Pompeo’s Net Worth
Beyond Ellen’s staggering paycheck for her role in Grey’s Anatomy, she has also distinguished herself as a hustling woman. Over a decade ago, she launched Calamity Jane, her own production company, which sold multiple projects to ABC studios. With some contribution from her active influencer marketing, Ellen Pompeo’s net worth is a stupefying $80 million.
Lessons from the Life of Ellen Pompeo
Death is a Reason to Cherish Life.
Ellen lost her mom to an overdose at the tender age of five. Usually, this is one of the hardest things young minds can process. But of all the ways Ellen could have seen it, she believed that her mom’s early death was a reason why she should cherish life.

Overcome Your Past
“I didn’t grow up with a particularly happy childhood. So, the idea that I have this great husband and these three beautiful children…A happy home life is really something I need to complete.” ~ Ellen Pompeo
She identified a problem from her past and fixed it. I am sure this is something you can also do. Look at the hurdles from your past and take a cue from the Doc herself. Overcome!
