We are just recovering from the heat of the summer, and as the season moves into cooler autumn weather, some Australians will still be plagued by perilous insects and bothersome bugs. The country’s climate is as diverse as its landscape, and while in some areas the bugs will make their yearly retreat, many will still be faced with the country’s very diverse bug problem. From beetles to spiders and other creepy crawlies, the country is home to a variety of both poisonous and non-poisonous insects.
Bugs are more than a nuisance than a hazard, but they can also damage the very structure of a home if left unchecked. The job of pest control is never finished for the homeowners especially in a country that offers its residents the beauty and wonder of warm weather and tropical-like conditions in some places. However, routine pest control can, in most instances, reduce the number of insects that make your home their home.
Continue reading for some useful tips as to how you can keep your home bug-free.
Keep your space clean
While there are bugs that are natural predators, there are homegrown bugs that love filth. One of the best ways to prevent infestations or the incidence of the bugs from appearing in your home is to keep areas very clean. The two big areas where bugs tend to gravitate are the bathroom and the kitchen and for obvious reasons.
In the bathroom, making sure that the space is properly cleaned routinely depending on how many people are sharing is very important. In the kitchen, making sure to not leave dirty dishes out overnight and emptying the trash are very integral to keeping rodents out of your home.
Spray frequently
If you live in a bug prone area, having pest control come out and spray a few times a year can help reduce the number of pests that show up in your home. On your own, homeowners should spray at least once a week, if dealing with a huge problem.
Homeowners can also lay down boric acid in some cases to reduce the number of certain types of pests.
Use natural repellents
If you do not want to use synthetic spray, which can be strong, consider using natural remedies to repel insects. Peppermint oil, apple cider vinegar, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, cayenne pepper, and silica gel are some of the more popular remedies. These natural repellents can deter insects from spiders to bed bugs.
Avoid storing newspapers and paper bags
If you are still one of the few Australians who read hard copies of the newspaper or takes home paper bags, consider exchanging both for more eco-friendly options. Not only will you help the Earth, but you can potentially reduce the number of bug infestations in your home. Newspapers and paper bags are warm, dark spaces where bugs like to hide.
Moreover, if you rely heavily on either, avoid storing them because again they are a haven for pests.
Repair gaps in the home
Finally, homeowners can reduce the number of insects that enter the home through cracks and holes in and around the home by closing them up. Caulking, repairing gaps in siding and cracks in mortar, and using mesh around screens and windows can prevent insects from entering the home.
Also, placing rubber lining around the inside of doors can prevent insects from entering, as they have the habit of hiding above and around doorways, especially in the evenings.
Bug-free ease
The country has one of the balmiest climates making it a great place to live. At the same time, bugs — and a diverse variety — come with this great weather, which can hamper the enjoyment of your living space.
At home, bugs can interfere with the comfort and ease of owning or renting property, but with constant vigilance and routine maintenance, your home can be easily kept bug-free.
