Joe Namath is one of the most iconic quarterbacks in gridiron football history. He began his career in the Alabama crimson tide football program, playing college football for the university. Namath performed impressively during his college football years, going as far as guiding Alabama university to a national championship win. He excelled at the highest level of college football, which paved the way for the rest of his professional career.
Unsurprisingly, the New York Jets picked Namath first overall during the 1965 AFL draft. This was when gridiron football had two significant leagues; the national football league and the American football league. Early Life and Career Information
Born to Janos and Rose Namath, Joe grew up in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and was raised by his Roman Catholic parents alongside four siblings. Namath excelled at various sports during his high school years at Beaver Falls High. He most notably played Basketball, Baseball, and Football.
His physique allowed him to put up impressive performances in most sports, and he was known to dunk frequently at a time when dunking was uncommon in high school basketball.
The Beaver High school football team had an impressive coach, and they went on to win the WPIAL Class AAA Championship with a 9-0 record. Namath’s high school baseball career was equally as remarkable, so much so that he received offers from several major league baseball teams after graduating. These include the Yankees, Guardians (Indians), Phillies, Pirates, and Reds.
Namath had a genuine love for baseball and almost played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He, however, chose to honor his mother’s concern for his education and enrolled in the University of Alabama. Namath dazzled and impressed the fans during his college football days.
He led the Alabama Crimson Tide to a national championship victory in 1964, and this garnered the attention of AFL and NFL teams alike. As a result, he was picked first overall in the 1965 AFL draft a few years later by the New York Jets. This was when the AFL and the NFL were at odds with each other.
Namath also received a bid from the St.Louis Cardinals, picked 12th overall during the 1965 NFL draft. He decided to play for the jets and led the team to an AFL championship victory and an unprecedented underdog win at Superbowl III.
Joe Namath built up a mainstream appeal during his pro league days and earned himself the “Broadway Joe” title after his appearance in Sports Illustrated. He ventured into acting and starred in many noteworthy screen titles from the late 60s to the early 2010s.
Namath often did cameos in popular shows, such as The Simpsons, and even took on other roles. He played Newt Newton on the “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” Captain Hollis in “The Last Rebel,” and even T.J Bryant on “The A-team.”
Namath met and fell in love with his ex-wife, Deborah Mays, at a voice acting class. They married the year after and had two daughters, Jessica and Olivia. Namath, unfortunately, fell into heavy alcoholism, which threatened his marriage and later led to a divorce and a lot of drama.
After a humiliating interview during the Jet’s announcement of their All-time team, Namath swore never to touch the bottle again and has since made a recovery.
