Early Life and Career Information

Julia was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1971. She is the first of eight children in her family. However, when Julia was just three years old, Julia and her parents left Russia and moved to Austin, Texas, in the United States.

They moved again and settled in Monsey, New York City, an ultra-orthodox Jewish community where Julia attended a religious girl’s school, leaving her in isolation. Her parents found this Haredi community very alluring and accepted it as they became more religious.

For the women in the community, regular activities like singing, dancing, or uncovering any body parts that weren’t their hands and face were prohibited. According to them, these actions could provoke sinful thoughts in their men.

Haart attended Brooklyn’s Bais Yakoov Academy. At 16, she taught herself to sew, and she smuggled fashion magazines into her Jewish household. When she turned 19, she married her first husband, a Yeshiva student, Yosef Handler, who was five years older than she was.

Her marriage with Yosef Handler is said to be an arranged one where she had to live a structured life as an obedient wife and eventual mother of four children.

While living as a Haredi Jew in the 1990s and 2000s, Julia became disillusioned with the ways of her community. She was particularly disturbed by the treatment of her younger daughter Miriam. The latter was open about her dislike for the strict lifestyle in the community and refused to conform to it.

She was already 35, but that was when her whole journey began. Julia, during the time, dealt with depression and considered taking her own life, but she didn’t because she worried how the stigma in the Haredi community would affect her children. Within eight years, Julia prepared for her departure from the community. She taught Judaic studies at Yeshiva under the name Talia Hendler and sold life insurance secretly to save money.

After her oldest daughter’s wedding, Julia left her husband and the community and changed her last name to “Haart.” She got it from her maiden name Leibov, close to the Hebrew word for “Heart.” After quitting the community in 2013, Julia launched a shoe brand she called “Julia Haart.”

The essence of her brand was to make shoes both stylish and comfortable. Her business was a success as she went on to sell shoes in 17 different countries.

In 2016, Haart collaborated with La Perla for their Fall and Spring accessories Line. She was appointed as the brand’s creative director the following year. Subsequently, she set a new approach to ready-to-wear for La Perla in motion after her appointment. At La Perla, she also launched collections of ready-to-wear lingerie for the brand with built-in support.

For her 2017 Fall/Winter fashion presentation, Haart created a La Perla Manor runway show where top models like Naomi Campbell, Lindsey Wixon, Kendall Jenner, and Sasha Pivovarova walked. Julia Haart is, however, mostly recognized for customizing Kendall Jenner’s 2017 Met Gala dress. The gown had 85,000 crystals attached to a single string.

In March 2019, she became CCO and CEO of the biggest talent media agency in the world, Elite World Group. Under Haart’s leadership, the EWG brand has been restructured and released new divisions. Elite World Groups majors in supporting models in monetizing their brands and projects.

Lessons from the Life of Julia Haart

Believe in Yourself

“You don’t know what you’re capable of until you get up and try.” ~ Julia Haart.

When Julia decided to start a career in fashion, she was in her forties and had no experience. But it didn’t stop her from pursuing what she wanted.

According to Julia, it didn’t occur to her that it was strange to start a shoe brand when she had never made a shoe. Ever since she not only successfully launched and sold her shoe brand, but she’s now the CEO of the Elite World Group.

Courage is a Virtue

Exiting her extremely Orthodox Haredi community wasn’t easy for Julia. She felt suppressed and isolated as a woman in her community, and as such, she had to break free to follow her dreams, and she succeeded. That takes courage.
