Early Life and Career Information
Kevin Wayne Durant “KD” was born on September 29, 1998, to Wayne Pratt and Wanda Durant in Washington DC. At a very tender age, KD’s father abandoned his family and eventually divorced his wife. As a result, he was raised by his grandmother, Barbara, who was a strong influence and encouraged him to play basketball despite jeers about his height from his peers.
KD was raised in Prince George County, Maryland, with his three siblings, Brianna, Anthony, and Rayvonne. At age 13, Durant’s father returned to his life, and together, they toured the country, attending basketball tournaments.
At the beginning of his career, KD spent much of his time at the Seat Pleasant Activity Centre, aka the “Rec,” and then played in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) for numerous basketball teams in Maryland, including the PG Jaguars with future NBA teammate, Michael Beasley.
KD led the Jaguars to win two AAU Championships and began wearing the number 35 jersey in honor of his late AAU coach and mentor, Charles Craig.
He played for the National Christian Academy and Oak Hill Academy before transferring to Montrose Christian School for his senior year and was named second-best player in his high school class of 2006.
KD began his college career when he enrolled at the University of Texas. He played for the University of Texas Longhorns. Still, he opted to drop out of college after just one season with the Longhorns before formally declaring for the 2007 NBA draft and was selected as the second overall pick by the Seattle SuperSonics.
KD displayed an impressive run in his first season at the Seattle SuperSonics and was named the NBA Rookie of the year. After a successful first season with the Seattle SuperSonics, the team relocated to Oklahoma, operating under a new name, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Before the beginning of the 2010 season, KD announced a contract extension with the City Thunder valued at $86 million. In the 2013-2014 regular season, KD’s impressive statistics earned him the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) title.
In his final season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, KD suffered a setback when he sustained a fracture in his right foot. KD would later opt for a minor surgery following two injuries he sustained while playing against the Golden State Warriors and the Phoenix Suns and was officially ruled out of the season.
In July 2016, KD got tongues wagging when he signed with the Golden State Warriors and played his debut game in October of the same year. Again, due to an injury, KD missed the final 19 games of the season but returned in time to help the team move on to their third consecutive finals.
During the 2016-2017 season, KD was at his peak, finishing as the top scorer for every game in the finals, earning him the title of NBA Finals MVP and his first NBA Championship when the Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers. Subsequently, in the 2017-2018 regular season, KD led the Warriors to another NBA championship, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In 2019, KD signed with the Brooklyn Nets and made his debut in December of the same year. KD, however, was sidelined for the 2019-2020 season after suffering from an Achilles injury. KD also plays for the United States Men’s National Basketball Team and is a three-time Olympic gold medallist.
Throughout his career in the NBA, KD has won several awards, including NBA Rookie of the Year, NBA MVP, NBA Finals MVP, FIBA World Championship MVP, NBA All-Star MVP, and NBA Scoring Champion.
