Such is the amount of pressure that comes with publishing a magazine. It’s not just about how insightful and relevant its contents are. It’s also about how this content is presented in a way that catches people’s eyes and makes them grab a copy no matter where they are.

There are a lot of factors that should be considered in creating a magazine layout. All your amazing content could go to waste if your magazine has poor layout and is not presented the right way.
The cover should have it all.
Your magazine cover serves as the preview of every single treat and goodie that you have prepared for your audiences inside those pages. So remember that no matter how awesome those treats and goodies are, they would never be discovered if you don’t take the sneak peek seriously.
The cover should be catchy enough to grab your specific audience’s attention – not too full, but never lacking in content either.
The language should be appropriate.
Your magazine will never do well if you use trendy and hip expressions that are not even in the dictionary yet in creating a business or a housekeeping magazine (unless it’s a feature article geared towards helping businessmen and mothers understand how teenagers talk).
Neither can you expect teenyboppers to grab a magazine that uses a serious business approach.
Figure out who your target audience is first, then use the language that they can relate with the most. Also, remember that this does not just apply to the content within the magazine – this goes for the cover as well.
The headlines and subheadings should pop.
This is how people browse magazines. They look at the cover. Once they find an interesting headline, they browse the pages inside. They scan the titles and the subheadings. Once these pass their inspection, that’s the only time they would read everything else.
Because of this, it cannot be emphasized enough – titles, headlines, and subheadings should pop out the moment anyone lays their eyes on them.
The layout should be catchy but organized.
Magazine readers scan and browse first before they read. This means that your layout plays a huge role on how successful your magazine would be.
Too crowded and they get tired of it, too much space and they’ll think there’s nothing to see.
