They say under our oceans lie an alien world yet to be fully explored. And they would be right. With 97 percent of the earth’s surface made up of water, oceans make up 71 percent of that.
Who knows what could be lurking just below our islands and atolls? Could it be beasts? Sea serpents? Or perhaps, ancient treasure?
The Ocean Is Life
There’s still an ongoing debate over where life supposedly began. Many chemists suggest that life started on land, in places where things like geothermal fields could provide the necessary living conditions for primitive cells to thrive and eventually, evolve. But biologists argue that earth’s waters have provided continuous proof that mankind may have come from the ocean floor.
Whether or not which side is correct, it is true that humans have depended on water to survive. We have built communities and cities near bodies of water, like rivers and lakes. Oceans and seas have served as the world’s platform for trade and commerce. Inasmuch as it has brought people together, the same waters have brought us apart as well.
Healing Powers of Water
There are specific names for therapy that involves water from the oceans. Thalassotherapy for example, is a kind of treatment that uses seawater and related products. Balneotherapy on the other hand, is the method of managing diseases by bathing in mineral springs, or mineral-rich water, like that found in oceans.
In fact, just being near the sea can calm our nerves and help ground us. This is why so many people come to the beach. Aside from admiring sunsets, having the ocean around us can be a soothing reminder to take things slow.
