Here’s a sobering fact. In the last 3400 years, our world didn’t have war for a total of 268 years. That’s a mere eight percent out of the past three and a half millennia. It is probably safe to assume that none of us in this generation has lived without a war going on somewhere on the planet.
When you read the newspapers or turn on the television for the news, most of the reports tend to be about corruption, violence, crime, or whatever terrible events currently happening. Sadly, we’re so used to seeing all these negativities in our newsfeeds that we’re almost desensitized to them.
It also goes without saying that each one of us is fighting through all sorts of challenges in our daily lives. From the pressures of our daily jobs, to the conflicts that arise in any relationship, to complications concerning health, we seemingly have our hands full of difficulties all the time.
Having said all of that, not all hope is lost. Inner peace amidst this chaotic world is most definitely still attainable. Granted, there’s not much we can do to completely eradicate the world of crimes, violence, and hatred. There’s also not much we can do to pacify warring nations, with the term “world peace” mostly attached to a cliché beauty pageant answer.
However, there are plenty of little things we can do every day to still feel internal peace.
Spend Time in Nature
There are few activities in life more calming than taking a stroll through nature. In today’s fast-paced world, with taller skyscrapers, faster cars, and more sophisticated gadgets produced at a rapid pace, sometimes a leisurely walk along some greenery is just what we need to de-stress and clear our minds. Often, a literal breath of fresh air is all we need to feel calmer and more serene.
Experience the Power of Meditation
A simple yet very effective way to feel inner peace is through meditation. This age-old practice has been proven to work in easing the anxieties that come with life’s daily bustles. Simple meditation activities like closing your eyes and visualizing a relaxing situation, breathing exercises, or repeating a personally meaningful mantra can be performed wherever you are.
There are also many types of meditations out there. Look for ones that you are most comfortable doing, whether it be in a formal class with an instructor or on your own. Try to do it every day, especially during moments when you feel stressed, and you are on your way to inner peace.
Let Go of What You Can’t Control
Not everything in life goes as planned. We will all experience failure at some point, fall short of our goals, and experience disappointment. Sometimes there’s just nothing we can do about it. However, to have inner peace is to accept the fact that not every problem can be solved. We have to learn to let go and move on.
There is no point in worrying over something beyond our capacity to fix. Doing so would only rob us of joy. Instead, it is better to learn to simply roll with life’s punches. Take whatever lessons you can but choose not to stress about anything beyond your control.
Look at the Bright Side of Life
There is always something to be grateful for, and an attitude of gratitude is essential to achieving peace. Count your blessings instead of your problems. See what lessons you can learn from bad experiences and figure out how you can turn lemons into lemonade.
When you learn to recognize and acknowledge the good things that come along with the bad, you’ll feel better about the quality of life you have. You’ll feel better about yourself. You’ll be happy and contented, and you’ll be at peace.
In the end, no one will ever live a perfect life. We won’t be happy all the time, and the world may never experience lasting peace. Still, there are always small and simple things we can do every day to achieve inner peace. In a world that seems full of never-ending conflict, inner peace may just be the most valuable possession anyone can have.
