“Eat clen, tren hard, anavar give up” – unknown.

This phrase is referring to the saying – “eat clean, train hard and never give up”, but it’s been replaced with steroid-names.

Clen is an abbreviation for clenbuterol, tren stands for trenbolone and anavar is a well-known cutting anabolic steroid. This phrase is often used by trolls online, when commenting on a bodybuilder’s photo, insinuating that the person’s taken steroids.

“Steroids are for guys who want to cheat opponents” – Lawrence Taylor.

This is a pretty controversial quote that will stir up emotions in athletes who take steroids, and are on them because everybody else is on them. Some athletes do have the intention to cheat whilst others are trying to make it a level playing field.

Lawrence Taylor is an ex-NFL star who had a stellar career with the New York Giants, becoming one of the greatest linebackers to ever grace the game.

“I don’t believe in bodybuilders using steroids. If a man doesn’t have enough male hormones in his system to create, a nice hard, muscular body, he should take up ping pong” – Steve Reeves

Steve Reeves is arguably bodybuilding’s most popular natural bodybuilder. He won prestigious titles (back in the 40/50’s), becoming Mr America, Mr World and Mr Universe. Steve will also be remembered for being one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s idols (as well as Reg Park) and helping to inspire the legendary Austrian to to great heights in bodybuilding and Hollywood. Steve also had a successful acting career appearing in films like Hercules, which Arnold later appeared in.

Steve Reeves is one of the few bodybuilders who you can pretty much 100% guarantee wasn’t on steroids because his era was before the 60’s (when steroids were first used by bodybuilders). Thus all the bodybuilders pre-60’s were almost certainly natural – which gives you a small insight into how big you can get naturally.

“Steroids are used in all pro sports” – Dorian Yates

A simple, yet powerful quote from Dorian Yates – the 6 time Mr Olympia champion. Bodybuilding often gets a bad reputation for being a steroid-fuelled sport, but Dorian makes a good point in that steroids are rife in many sports.

The difference in other sports is drug-use is more subtle (and difficult for fans to spot), because you don’t have a line-up of 250lb bodybuilders posing naked in-front of you. When a guy is freakishly big, even your grandma will be able to tell he’s been injecting needles in his butt.

“Are we to say that any individual who’s on steroids that has an angry moment is due to steroids? What about the individual who gets angry and kills someone who’s not on steroids? What do we blame it on now?” – Jose Canseco

‘Roid rage’ is one of the side effects of taking steroids, due to them increasing testosterone levels to excessively high levels. Jose also makes a good point in that anger cannot just be attributed to steroids, because there are many angry men who don’t juice. Also there are those who take steroids and don’t become angry.

“Steroids is now just a word that the lazy and ignorant use to describe any guy that has more muscle and dedication than them” – Mike O’Hearn

Mike O’Hearn is a self-proclaimed natural bodybuilder, however he has a number of haters who accuse him of taking steroids. He’s never shy’d away from talking about steroids and has even insulted fans for accusing him of cheating.

Trolls have nicknamed him ‘Mike O’Tren’, however he’s never tested positive for anabolic steroids despite years of random testing.

“If you have the choice to stay natural or do steroids, stay natural. There’s no reason to do steroids, you’re hurting your body. You’re hurting yourself” – Rich Piana

The irony of this quote is deeply saddening, as these are words of Rich Piana before he passed away. Rich was a famous bodybuilder and a heavy steroid-user for many years. Rich’s autopsy revealed that he had heart disease, with his liver also being twice the size of a normal male. His exact cause of death however was undetermined.

“I’m not on steroids…but thanks for asking” – unknown.

This is one of the best quotes for natural bodybuilders, often seen on tank tops and T-shirts in gyms across the globe. It’s appropriate for those who are fed up of people accusing them of being on steroids. This quote is their way of putting the record straight.

I have no regrets about it (taking steroids), because at that time it was something new that came on the market, and we went to the doctor and did it under doctors’ supervision” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold is one of the most famous steroid-users of all time, thought to be taking dianabol among other substances back in the 60’s.

He’s admitted to using them but has never recommended others to use them today. Arnold has always defended himself and other bodybuilders who used AAS many years ago, by saying it was legal and doctor-approved back then. It’s clear that they didn’t understand the dangers of steroids to the full extent that we do today.

“You know which guys are doing steroids and which ones aren’t. I don’t judge anybody. Everybody has their own life and people do what they want. It’s like smoking pot. If you experiment with it, it doesn’t mean you’re the devil, and it doesn’t mean you’ve ruined your body. It just means you tried it.” – Dolph Lundgren

Dolph has been linked to taking steroids in real life and in his movie life, whilst playing Ivan Drago, the Soviet boxer who fought against Rocky Balboa.

With Lundgren defending steroid-use from a morality stand-point, this could indicate that he may have used them in the past. However, it’s hard to disagree with his opinion as many Americans die each day due to alcohol consumption and cigarettes (which are widely accepted compared to steroids).
