According to Mono, their Civilian Series backpacks were designed for the rough-and-tumble life of the urban adventurer. Without a doubt, that description is right on the money. With the Expander, Mono didn’t want to take the bells and whistles route. They stuck with the classic “form follows function” principle, and that’s one of the main reasons why I fell in love with this minimal pack.
The Expander is intentionally slim, light, and compact. It’s a harmonious match for your laptop, shades, sketchbook, cables, magazines, books, headphones, and camera. Here are some noteworthy features:
- Fits 15″ laptops
- Waterproof
- Lightweight
- Custom MONO expander ring
- Steel rivet reinforcements
- Industrial rubber sole
- Faux fur lining
- Animal-free
To protect your laptop the Expander provides a stylish internal sleeve. Once you’ve filled the main compartment to the max, there is always room for more. If you’re packing some books, accessories, cables, clothes, gadgets, or any other miscellaneous items, the expansion zipper is there to help you. By un-zipping the middle zipper you’ll create more storage space in the main compartment.
You can also store more items in the small pocket located on the front side of the backpack. This area is great for keeping smaller items that you might need to reach in a quick manner like keys, cell phone, bottle opener, wallet, and etc. Currently, the only color available is jet black. Don’t let that discourage you. Black is beautiful. It will match with all of your clothes, match with the rain, and you’re less likely to notice dirt from a far distance.
The handle is constructed from high grade webbing. It’s strategically stitched for structure and reinforced with steel rivets. The bottom panel is made of indestructible material called Hypalon rubber. Hypalon rubber is widely noted for its resistance to chemicals, temperature extremes, and ultraviolet light. The ergonomic form of the Expander hugs your shoulders while a set of strategically placed body panels allow air to circulate.
Overall this backpack is perfect for bike riding, around town activity, and light travel. I would strongly recommend the Expander to anybody who expects quality and appreciates value.
