Many things can make people feel sad. If you’ve had a rough day for example, even the tiniest instances can quickly upset you, like evening traffic or a spilled drink on the floor.
Sometimes, the emotion won’t even set in immediately. This usually happens over big events like the loss of a loved one or moving to a new place. When you least expect it, you’ll be surprised that tears are already falling on your cheeks.
People can also feel miserable over things like movies, a family video, or the bad luck of a friend.
Difference Between Sadness and Depression
Everybody feels sad from time to time. But when the emotion doesn’t go away, or you notice other things have changed about you, then perhaps it could be something more.
Sadness and depression are not interchangeable. The latter definitely requires medical attention. While sadness can vary in intensity and duration, it goes away.
Depression on the other hand, is a serious medical condition that can affect how an individual thinks and acts. It is more than simply feeling a bout of sadness – it can make you lose sleep, appetite, and energy. You may find yourself unable to take pleasure in the activities you normally enjoy. Other symptoms include inability to concentrate, agitation, feelings of guilt and/or worthlessness, and suicidal thoughts.
Depression can only be diagnosed by a professional. If you feel that you may be experiencing prolonged sadness or any of the symptoms mentioned, please reach out to a trusted friend or loved one, and seek medical attention.
Don’t avoid feeling sad. Manage it in your own way and remember that all things pass eventually. To help ease the pain a little, read these wise quotes about sadness and life.
