Gone are the days of poorly designed Myspace sites with dancing glitter GIFs and seemingly endless scrolling in three out of four directions. The neat, clean and easy-to-navigate layouts of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr have ousted the horrific Myspace and GeoCities pages of the early-to-mid-2000s. Gone are the days of companies reaching out through primitive giveaways, phone calls announcing that you’ve just won an all expense paid trip to Aruba, and promises of a free timeshare after sitting through a three-hour informational session.

Instead, we’re using our fresh and clean social media sites to find out about these same giveaways, and businesses are realizing it’s in their best interest to run promotions and discounts through social media. Why?

1. Beneficial for the Site

It’s no secret that people love free stuff. And, businesses that run campaigns and giveaways via their social media sites stand to gain a lot. Blue Nile’s recent campaign, Are You Man Enough, challenged guys to submit a short video or essay about why they are manly enough to propose to their girlfriends in a high stakes situation—Times Square on Black Friday. Blue Nile, a large online retailer for diamonds, engagement rings, wedding bands and other jewelry ran the campaign through their Facebook page, but also incorporated their Youtube account, iPhone app and Twitter account. Using all of their social media avenues to promote the giveaway will ultimately drive traffic not only to the company Facebook page, but also to their website.

Businesses that use a well-designed social media site along with a campaign can reasonably expect to experience higher traffic to their website and more consumer engagement and interaction.

2. Better Layout and Usability

Most companies already have a professionally designed social media site that matches both the company site and other social media pages. Incorporating a well-planned campaign page to a pre-existing social media site can enhance the overall layout and usability if done well.

Facebook is arguably one of the most user-friendly sites on the web. Though users gripe whenever changes are made, once they adapt to the new layout, they soon find that perusing their friends’ photos and sharing information is even more convenient than it was before. Studies also show that people are spending more time on Facebook now than they were even two years ago.

With Facebook’s user-friendly design, high traffic and ease of information sharing, feeding a targeted giveaway to the social media monster is sure to draw positive attention.

3. The Intersection of Marketing and Design

Incorporating an effective giveaway will also mean that you are taking care of both marketing and design together. Without clever marketing, a good design is wasted and without a good design, clever marketing is wasted. Using both of these together is your best bet for success, and social media giveaways are one of the easiest way to combine both of these important aspects.

Using a well-designed campaign on your social media pages is a great way to get more traffic, push customer engagement and get your name out there. Doing giveaways often will keep customers coming back, and keeping up with design means they’ll have a great experience every time!
