Lessons from Taylor Sheridan
1. Success takes time
Taylor Sheridan began acting in the mid-90s. But he waited about ten years before landing his breakout acting role, clear proof that success rarely comes overnight.
2. There’s no such thing as free lunch
Sheridan made headlines recently for allegedly refusing to give Jennifer Lawrence acting lessons. While these claims (if true) may reflect adversely on the filmmaker’s sense of kindness, they certainly lend credence to the notion that ‘nothing good comes for free.’
3. Take full control of your projects
Taylor Sheridan has transitioned from a small-time actor to a filmmaker who takes full control of his projects. Not only does Sheridan produces his movies and television shows. He also directs, writes, and stars in many of them.
Famous Quotes by Taylor Sheridan
• In the late ’90s, I spent a lot of time on reservations, and there was a level of poverty and injustice that I had not witnessed before. I was shocked by it. This is federally controlled land, and there was an insidious mix of apathy and exploitation.
• I’ve made up little mantras for myself, catchphrases from a screenwriting book that doesn’t exist. One is ‘Write the movie you’d pay to go see.’ Another is ‘Never let a character tell me something that the camera can show me.’
• My job is not to give you all the answers. My job is to ask the questions.
• Part of our job as storytellers is to show people pockets of the world that they don’t know. The more we understand, the more we don’t judge.
• Plot is just not my gift. I’m fascinated with complex characters, and that doesn’t mix well with complex plots. And by the way, when the plot is simple, you can move one piece around and make it feel fresh. Hell or High Water’s a good example: I don’t tell you why the brothers are robbing the bank.
Summary
Taylor Sheridan is a filmmaker and actor with a strong work ethic. Thanks to his industrious spirit, the ‘Yellowstone’ creator has earned himself a net worth of $15 million as at November 1, 2022.
