The storage is an important part in any digital device. Some tech-savvy people buy a digital device just for a high storage capacity. Nowadays it is a part of the tradition in technology to come up with higher capacity storage facility in any gadget, to get the buyers’ attention. There are many variants of storage options available for the tech-minded people.
Some of them are; flash drives, flash memories, internal and external hard disks, SSD (solid state drive) etc. All of them are of different variants and capacities. The flash drive and memory card come at the maximum capacity of 64GB. Imagine the possibilities with these tiny storage chips in future.
Hard drives and SSD
In modern day computing, hard drives are used for large scale storage while Solid State Drives are used for fast data transfer rate (DTR). The maximum capacity of hard disks in present day is up to 3TB. The capacity is huge, and these are technically called high density drives. The days of floppy drives are over; this was capable of storing only 1.44MB of data.
The solid state memory is a recent invention. Unlike the hard drives, it has no movable parts inside, so data security and integrity in solid state storage are much more advanced. It is available in the market today for desktops for high performance data transfer.
The Nano-imprinting technology for future
This new technology claims to double the capacity of the drives available today. The personal data storage needs are increasing rapidly, so people are enthusiastic in such technologies to arrive. It is a kind of self-assembling method that this technology is capable of making high density drives in the future. If such technology really succeeds, then it will definitely come for the iPhone 4 users. The current maximum capacity of this phone is 64GB, but with the arrival of such technologies, the smartphone manufacturer giants will sure adapt the new technology for their devices.
The HAMR and the PMR
The HAMR stands for heat assisted magnetic recording. It is an innovative digital storage technology for future. This technology claims to offer the storage solution up to 60TB within the next ten or twelve years. This new method of storage supports 2 million bits/inch of linear bit density.
The perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology available today only offers density of 620GB/sq. Inch. Now, you can imagine the possibilities with HAMR. The first digital storage technology for computer was invented in 1956 named, longitudinal recording. The PMR method is quite new as it was released in 2006.
The flash memory revolution
As the innovation progresses for computer hard drives, the revolution for flash memory has also come a long way from the past. The recent innovations of the flash drives and memories helped this segment of storage a lot. The maximum capacity is up to 1TB, and it is already invented by some of the manufacturers.
So, small portable gadget owners can expect to have them in their devices in the coming years. The new innovative technologies for flash memories are also on the line of research. The increasing market demand for high capacity storage is one main reason such revolution in digital storage.
