As a small business owner, the quality of your website can make or break you. That is why choosing the right web designer for your website is so crucial. Picking the perfect person to design your website can prove to be a very daunting task, especially if it is your first time doing so. There are many things to take into consideration. What style are you looking for? What is your price range? Do you want someone who is just a designer or a web developer as well?
If you are facing this big decision and are still unsure on how to go about selecting the right person for the job, here are some important aspects that you need to take into consideration before hiring the person who will be a vital part of building and presenting your website and company to the world.
1) Do they have any references?
Checking references is very important unless you personally know the designer. If you don’t know them, be sure to talk to other people who have worked with that person in order to determine that the designer has a good work ethic, communicates well, meets deadlines and does quality work. Looking at a designer’s portfolio sometimes is not enough to determine how well they work, because even if the websites the designer created ended up looking great, the process might not have been as pleasant as the results look.
2) Do they code as well?
Even if they are not full-fledged web developers, most great designers should be able to code very well along with fulfilling their design duties. This is very important, because a good coding job can save you from many potential headaches in the long run. Having a well-coded website to begin with makes it much easier for other people to make additions or changes to the site if they are needed. Freelancers rarely dedicate themselves to projects as long term situations, so the chances that this person will not always be there to change and edit your website’s design are not very good. This is why having good coding to start off with is very important when considering your website’s future.
3) Does their style match yours?
There are some designers that have the chameleon-like ability to switch between styles and master many difference aesthetics, but the majority of good designers have their own style that they have crafted and honed over the years. Even if you love the style of a certain designer, think about whether it is a good match for your company and your image. Having a website design that is appealing to your key demographic is a lot more important than having a website that appeals to your personal tastes.
All in all, hiring a designer to create a site for you and your business is one of the most important decisions that you will need to make and it is not something that needs to be rushed. Be very thorough in your search and your selection process, because the success of your company or business could depend on it.
