Tina Turner is a renowned singer, actress, dancer, and songwriter.
She started her career in 1958 with her ex-husband Ike Turner before they divorced and she left his band. Tina is revered as the queen of rock n roll, and it certainly is not hard to see why. She is the 63rd greatest artist of all time and ranks no. 17 in Rolling Stone magazine’s most remarkable artists of all time. Additionally, she was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
She has stars placed in both St. Louis and Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition, she has won 12 Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement. Alongside her rankings and awards, the pop diva made it to the Guinness book of records for almost selling out a solo concert. Early Life and Career Information
Tina Turner was born “Anna Mae Bullock” in Brownsville, Tennessee, on November 26, 1939. Anna was the youngest daughter of 3 girls, and she attended Flagg Grove Elementary School in Nutbush, Tennessee.
When she was eleven, her mother left her family, and her father remarried and moved to Detroit. Due to her father’s relocation and her mother’s abandonment, Tina and her sisters lived with their grandmother in Brownsville, Tennessee.
Life in her grandmother’s home was “miserable” as her grandmother was strict. This was too oppressive for Tina’s free-spirited nature. Tina recounts that she was teased and bullied a lot; coupled with the lack of affection from her parents, she had less than a beautiful childhood.
Tina got involved with Raymond Hill in high school. She got pregnant with her first son Craig Raymond, born in 1958. She met her first husband shortly after, and they welcomed their son, Ronnie, two years before their marriage in 1962. Together they raised their son, Tina’s son, and Ike’s son from a previous relationship. Tina divorced Ike on March 29, 1978, after 16 years of marriage.
She met her second husband, Erwin Bach, in 1986. Bach was a musical executive assigned to pick Tina up at the airport before a concert. Subsequently, they started dating.
The couple moved to Switzerland and got married in 2013, after 27 years of dating. That same year, Tina renounced her American citizenship.
The start of Tina’s career is associated with Ike Turner. She and her sister frequented a nightclub where Turner performed with his band- the Kings of Rhythm. Tina impressed Ike with her vocals, and she became a lead singer in the band. Ike gave Tina the stage name “Tina Turner” and trademarked the name.
She launched her music career in July 1960 with the release of her song with Ike, “A Fool in Love.” The song peaked instantly, and they released another in 1961, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock and Roll Performance.
They enjoyed global success releasing many hits and a cover of “Proud Mary,” which won them another Grammy. After their divorce, their working relationship ended, and Tina launched her solo career.
