There is nothing quite as disheartening as Monday is. As Sunday night draws to a close, we all begin to dread the start of another school or work week.
However, once the week is in full swing, we get excited whenever the weekend is in sight again. This excitement usually begins to build on Wednesday or the mid-week mark. We know that the first two days are done, and with just one more final push, we’ll be basking in the glory of Saturday and Sunday once more.
Depending on how you think, Wednesday either represents a mid-week slump or a mid-week boost. Don’t let the hump day get you down. Focus on finishing your work so you can enjoy a fun and stress-free weekend.
Origin of the Word Wednesday
The concept of the seven-day week was first attributed to the Babylonians in 6th century BC. They had the most prevalent culture in the Near East and their ideas and concepts had spread far and wide. It wasn’t long before other cultures adopted the seven-day week.
While the idea of seven days in a week has stayed the same, the names of the days changed and evolved throughout history. The word “Wednesday” is derived from two powerful gods from history. In Old English or Germanic, Wednesday is from the god Woden. While in the Roman language, the name is derived from the Roman god Mercury–mercredi in French, and miercuri in Romanian.
These two gods don’t share many similarities other then their patronage of poetry and the arts. The god Woden, also known by his more famous name Odin, created the earth and sky, as well as the first man, woman, and ash tree. Woden is also credited with creating and maintaining the laws of the universe.
Mercury, in Roman mythology, was known as the Messenger of the Gods, or the God of Speed. He was the patron of arts, travelers, athletes, and sciences. To this day, he is still the most remembered god.
Making it Over the Hump
Wednesday is also referred to as “hump day”, meaning the middle of the week. No one knows exactly when the term hump day began, but some say that the term has been used since the 1960s.
What popularized the “hump day” moniker in modern pop culture was a 2013 commercial by an insurance company featuring a camel walking through the cubicles at the office and asking people what day it was, and someone said, “It’s hump day!”, happily.
Today, colleagues often greet one another “Happy Hump Day”, congratulating each other about making it past Monday and Tuesday and almost getting to the weekend. If you could just make it over the hump in the middle of the week–Saturday and Sunday would be in sight.
