When it comes to blogging, it is important to have the right tools available to ensure that your blog and blog posts are absolutely perfect. There are a number of different Content Management System (CMS) platforms that can be used to help you with all of your blogging wants and needs.
Because there are several of these platforms available, it may be hard for you to choose which CMS platform you are going to use while blogging. However, there are certain CMS platforms that have much more to offer than others.
The beauty of many of these CMS platforms is that they can be used to develop a full-fledged website solution. So keep this in mind as you review these CMS’s. In many cases, the blog is just one part of the entire website, but these CMS platforms are more than capable of solving most website issues. The following are all free, open source CMS solutions available for download and installation today.
Top Five CMS Platforms
Out of all the CMS platforms available on the Internet, there are some that are simply better than others because they have more to offer in terms of support, extra features, and general usability. The top five CMS platforms include:
- WordPress
- Joomla
- Drupal
- Umbraco
- Pligg
WordPress
WordPress is one the most commonly used CMS platforms on the Internet. WordPress provides a number of tools that are useful for those interested blogging or a full website. The platform operates efficiently using PHP so that bloggers can produce high quality content efficiently. There are also hundreds of free themes available on WordPress so that those who do not have the time to create their own web design for their blog can use the premade templates instead.
When it comes to convenience, WordPress has it. And with plugins, you can make WordPress do just about anything with little effort. WordPress has by far the most free support available and an entire industry dedicated to (paid) professional support. You really can’t go wrong, but you may find certain specific features of other CMS platforms fit your needs perfectly.
Joomla
Joomla is an ideal CMS platform for bloggers but especially for those who have just gotten started with blogging and are still learning the ropes. Like WordPress, Joomla also has plugins and an easy-to-use interface. If you’ve never used a CMS, some feel Joomla’s interface is a bit easier to use. Keep in mind this opinion is subjective, but be sure to give it a look if you find WordPress to be confusing.
Drupal
Drupal offers a CMS platform to bloggers who are interested in improving the overall look and feel of their blog. With a number of tools available, as a blogger, you will have no problem setting up your content and keeping it organized to your liking. Drupal organizes content in blocks in their backend interface, which is in contrast to the way information is organized in Joomla or WordPress. You may like this arrangement better, but this is a matter of taste, not performance.
Umbraco
Umbraco is ideal for big bloggers. This particular CMS platform was designed for large companies that are blogging. Those who have started their own blog would not necessarily benefit from this particular platform, although it has a lot to offer to bigger companies that are interested. The technology is built around ASP as opposed to PHP. It’s free, but you’ll need a strong development background if you want to jump into an Umbraco install.
Pligg
Pligg is a CMS platform that offers the tools for blogging but also helps make a connection with social networking as well. Those who are interested in blogging and connecting their blog with social media websites would find this platform quite useful. The layout is very simple and encourages readers to engage via social media logins.
The bottom line is that any of these CMS platforms are amazing and can do just about anything you need. Each has their strengths, so at the end of the day you need to determine your needs and see which fills your needs the best. Don’t forget to explore available free plugins for each solution as well since these add-ons are what make each CMS especially powerful and customizable.
