The #ClawLife prevailed over its competition through patience, perseverance, and social media gimmicks. This blend of seltzer-water, a gluten-free alcohol base and fruity flavors became the drink of summer 2019: a testament of how far fizzy water with a blend of alcohol could go.
A Brief History of White Claw
Water was first infused with carbon dioxide back during the 18th Century and it wasn’t much of a hit. Who wanted to drink blank fizzy water anyway? Then came the idea of adding fruity flavors to it, which didn’t fare all that good when people got a taste of sparkling water and seltzer.
Fast forward into the 1970s came a struggling entrepreneur by the name of Anthony von Mandl. He started off selling imported wines from his car until he was successful enough to buy his own vineyard. That was the time when sugary wine coolers were becoming a hit. He decided to make something similar but with malt.
That didn’t turn out so good. He tried again by making a drink for men who didn’t actually like beer but still wanted to be part of the group. In 1999, he started a company called Mark Anthony Group, with Mike’s Hard Lemonade – a malt beverage in a beer bottle, as its flagship drink.
So where did this fit in the booze-filled seltzer craze? 2013 saw the rise of the spiked seltzer market. These tasty drinks were low in calories which were a hit with fitness enthusiasts. Von Mandl decided to try and ride the popularity wave and released the first few flavors of his spiked seltzer brand in 2016.
And the rest, as they say, was history. Can’t get enough of this seltzer-water? Then why not join the #ClawLife with these funny White Claw memes.
