Every country in the world will have at least a folktale or two involving wolves. Known for their fearsome nature but also for their social characteristics, people live in awe and trepidation for these creatures. Of course, many of our anxieties towards them are usually caused by age-old lore, passed down from our grandfathers.
You’ve heard of the popular tale of Little Red Riding Hood. In Greek myth, the famous Romulus and Remus were sons of Mars and future founders of Rome, too. In Japan, folks believed wolves to be descended from a goddess, and are therefore protector. You’ll notice some shrines dedicated in their honor should you visit the country. For those who know Fenrir, he grew to be so big that he would later consume Odin during Ragnarok.
But the real wolf is far from these tales. Sure, they may be the biggest of the Canidae family, which includes foxes, coyotes, and the domesticated dog, but for the most part, they keep to themselves and have not been known to devour anyone. They will be territorial and aggressive to those in the same specie (other canines) though.
Contrary to popular belief, while wolves do have packs, it’s not uncommon to find solitary or lone wolves. Researchers even say that they hunt better and get superior results than their brothers who hunt in groups. They are known to take down prey much larger than themselves.
Another awesome trait is their fierce loyalty to their mate. It is said that once a pair have mated, they are destined for life and will normally remain monogamous. No wonder wolves are the preferred ink for folks who can relate to their trustworthiness and fidelity. But aside from that, these animals are also a symbol for leadership, survival, and intelligence.
