Pokémon had its beginnings as a Japanese game created by Game Freak in the 1980s. Fast forward to 1996, Nintendo published the founding pillars of the franchise: Pocket Monsters Red and Green. It played like a traditional Japanese RPG, where you travel across lands to be the top trainer and collect all 151 monsters during your quest. These hot-selling titles went on to introduce further generations of games that spanned across different platforms.
Pokémon started working its way out of the gaming niche and into pop culture when Tokyo saw it’s first anime episode in 1997. It featured Satoshi (Ash Ketchum to the non-Japanese crowd) and Pikachu’s adventures into different regions to collect gym badges, to shake the ever-present Team Rocket off their trail, chase after legendary Pokémon – and of course, to meet new friends along the way.
From the gaming community’s behavior to Satoshi’s seemingly ageless appearance, Pocket Monsters has made quite an impact to become the subject of many memes. Today, even folks who didn’t grow up with the franchise can still relate with most hardcore followers.
