In the realm of performing arts, while talent is undeniably essential, it’s the artists’ stories and experiences that truly enchant the audience, drawing us into their world. Enter Erin Sandy, a veritable blend of cultures and stages, a symphony of life experiences that shine through her every performance.
Now, grab that cup of tea or coffee, and come with us as we weave through the harmonious life of Erin. Her cultural tapestry is as vivid as it is varied. From the rhythms of South Africa to the melodies of Belgium and the echoes of the UAE, Erin has an uncanny ability to tap into the heartbeat of a place and its people, making her performances not just acts, but experiences.
Our world is vast, yet it’s artists like Erin who make it feel intimate, who remind us of the threads of humanity and passion that bind us all. Whether it’s the grand stages of Abu Dhabi or the quaint alleyways of Ghent, her art is a reminder of the universal language of emotion and expression.
As we dive deeper into Erin’s journey, I can’t help but be reminded of the age-old saying, “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” And truly, with Erin, you travel the world.
Growing up with roots in both South Africa and Belgium but being raised in the UAE must have been a unique experience. How do you believe this multicultural upbringing influenced your approach to music and performance?
I am profoundly grateful for my multicultural upbringing. It introduced me to the beauty and importance of diversity at a young age, and this is a value I carry with me daily.
Ah, the power of diverse roots! As an interviewer, I’ve always been fascinated by how multicultural backgrounds shape artistic expression. Performing across different countries and cultures, what strategies or methods do you employ to ensure your art resonates universally with diverse audiences?
I believe that truthfulness is paramount. Art speaks the language of the heart and soul, and one doesn’t need a specific language or history to connect and share through it.
Are there specific elements from South African, Belgian, or Emirati culture that you’ve consciously incorporated into your performances or music?
Subconsciously, I’m certain there are elements ingrained in who I am. However, I mostly strive to approach each project with fresh eyes, especially when portraying or singing a pre-existing character.
Having traveled and performed in places like Abu Dhabi, Ghent, and Prague, can you share a particularly memorable lesson or insight you’ve gained from one of these international stages?
Traveling is invaluable. Even though these stages might span different continents and be miles apart, each one has felt like home. As an artist, all you truly desire is a place and opportunity to do what you love and share it with others.
In your opinion, how does music and performance act as a universal language, helping bridge cultural or linguistic divides?
Music and performance have always existed in various shapes and forms throughout history and hold significant importance to society. By approaching art without expectations, respecting its origins, and genuinely connecting with what unfolds before you, there’s no need for specific linguistic skills or background knowledge.
Given the vast differences in cultural norms and audience expectations, have you faced any significant challenges while performing internationally? How did you navigate them?
I believe the key lies in remaining open-minded and being ever-ready to learn from everyone. The allure of art stems from each artist’s unique ability to infuse their interpretation into creations. Together, we’re crafting a tapestry woven from knowledge, experience, and beauty.
Of all the places you’ve performed, was there a location where the audience’s reaction was particularly surprising or moving for you?
In 2018, I performed a dance piece called “Weep” on the C-Mine stage in Genk, Belgium, choreographed by Véronique Lenaers. During this dance, we immersed ourselves in buckets of water, making the water almost like a duet partner as we embodied the choreography and narrative. I recall the audience’s reactions, expressing how engrossed they were in our story and how it resonated profoundly with their personal experiences.
This performance was a tremendous inspiration to me. As an artist, the goal is to connect with the audience, creating a space where people can feel and relate in ways that come naturally to them.
What a powerful moment! It’s these stories, these glimpses into an artist’s soul, that remind us of the transformative power of art. How has your international exposure shaped your worldview, both as an artist and as an individual? Are there global themes or messages you aim to convey through your art?
Love, respect, coupled with the ability to listen and continually learn from others, serve as the bedrock of my art.
A poignant note to end on. Erin Sandy’s narrative is a testament to the beauty of cross-cultural experiences and the magic they infuse into art. As we’ve journeyed with her today, we’re reminded once again that art, in its many forms, is a universal bridge, a meeting point, a conversation.
