Even before the written or spoken word, mankind practiced dance. Experts and historians believe that this was how stories have been passed down prior to word-of-mouth methods. That’s because dance, especially traditional ones, can be imbued with so much meaning and symbolism. These can vary depending on the culture, place, and of course, the people who created the dance.
Types of Dance
There are mainly two types of dance: theatrical and social.
Social dance is the one you would most see during weddings or festivals. It can involve a solo act or a group performance, sometimes with folk music. It’s usually done as a form of recreation, or to bring people together. A good example would be rhythm dancing, like the salsa, samba, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, and Jive.
Theatrical dance on the other hand, is all about performing for an audience. This is often done with a lot of planning, and elaborate costumes, advanced choreography, and stunning settings. Those who perform it are called “virtuoso dancers” because they have practised their craft for years. That’s why they can even interpret musical accompaniment in their own way, adding gracefulness and agility that’s fascinating to watch.
Short History
Did you know that one of the first recorded proof on dance were found on ancient paintings in India? It was dated to be about 9,000 years old.
Egyptians were among one of the first to use human motions in art and religion as well. Archaeologists were able to dig up dancing figurines as old as c. 3300 BC! Other records of our ancestors’ obsession to boogie also appeared in countries such as China, Greece, and Brazil.
Today, there are millions of people who move to the groove because not only is it fun, it’s a growing sector, too. From choreographers, dance instructors, to stage managers, and personal trainers – there’s an exciting world waiting for those who want to move to their own beat.
But even if you’re not good on your feet, you’ll certainly appreciate these awesome dance quotes.
