Tattoos are one of the oldest ways of self-expression. Today, people wear ink for many reasons, such as to cover up scars, to tell their personal story, and to remember loved ones.
You must’ve dreamed of having an intricate, colorful tatt for yourself at some point. Or maybe you’re looking to add another to your collection! If so, have you thought about minimalist tattoo designs?
What Is a Minimalist Tattoo?
They’re small, clean, and typically in black and white. It’s not uncommon to spot minimalist tattoos with a bit of color (e.g., one or two hues) though. Minimalist tatts come in a variety of designs, but nature, abstract shapes, and animals seem to be highly popular.
You can usually tell that it’s minimalist because it features simple lines and geometric forms. But there could also be complex patterns thrown in. For instance: a key with a drawing of the night sky, or an illustration of a female with flowers growing all around her body.
Pros and Cons of Minimalist Tattoos
The best part about minimalist tattoos is that they look great on everyone. They come highly recommended as your first ink. After all, if it’s your first time, you’re probably already nervous as heck about sitting for hours under a needle! So something small yet beautiful is the way to go (plus, you can always add more ink later).
Worried about tatts getting in the way of a job interview? You won’t have a problem with minimalist designs as they are discreet. Put them in areas like your shoulder, upper arm, or between your fingers so it’s easier to hide them should you need to. Thanks to their small size, they’re more affordable, too.
Charming as they are, they are not without a few drawbacks. The biggest would have to be that they’re obviously not as attention-grabbing. Another con is that not all tattoo artists cater to minimalist designs. You’ll want to check out several tattoo parlors, read reviews, and examine previous work to make sure you get the results you’re looking for.
With that said, these small tatts have the potential to tell big stories. Lots of folks use minimalist ink to express personal narratives, like surviving trauma or to honor a loved one who has passed.
