Early Life and Career Information
Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, better known as Daddy Yankee, was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, on February 3, 1977. He was born into a musical family, with his father being a salsa percussionist and his mother a manicurist with a musical background. It was only natural that he was drawn to music.
Despite having an inherent love for music, he nurtured dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. He pursued this dream by trying out for the Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners. His dreams were crushed, however, when he was hit by a stray bullet from an AK-47.
That encounter changed his life and prompted him to consider music as a viable career option. He made his debut on DJ Playero’s Playero 34 mixtape in 1994 with the song “So’ Persigueme, No Te Detengas.” Later, he released “No Mercy,” his first official studio project as a solo artist, on April 2, 1995.
Daddy Yankee rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his third studio album, “Barrio Fino,” which earned him a Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album. His breakout single, “Gasolina,” in his 2004 album, became the first reggaeton song to be nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
He featured in the 2017 viral hit song, “Despacito,” in which he collaborated with Luis Fonsi. It won a series of awards and nominations and was #1 on Billboard for four months. It currently stands as the second-most viewed video in the history of YouTube, with nearly 8 billion views.
Beyond his musical work, Yankee has made significant contributions to the humanitarian cause. He was honored with the annual Billboard’s Spirit of Hope Awards in 2009 for his philanthropic efforts through his foundation, “Corazón Guerrero.”
The music icon has also made moves in the movie industry, starring in and co-producing “Talento de Barrio” (2008). Daddy Yankee later revealed that while it wasn’t an autobiography, the movie included some aspects of his childhood.
He has managed to keep his private life hidden despite being in the spotlight for more than two decades. He got married to his high school sweetheart, Mirredys Gonzalez, in 1994 when they were both 17, and they have two daughters and one son.
