It’s great to have you here, Deb. Being consistently featured on Spotify’s editorial playlists is a significant accomplishment. Can you walk us through the journey of how your first track made it onto one of these influential lists?
As an artist, I’ve maintained a consistent release schedule, putting out new music each month. This regularity caught the attention of Spotify’s algorithm, which in turn started recognizing my work. I also garnered valuable support from music blogs and participated in interviews conducted by music enthusiasts. These collective efforts led Spotify to feature my first track on one of their influential editorial playlists, specifically the “+852 Rising” playlist. This exposure significantly boosted both my streaming numbers and overall visibility.
Spotify has a plethora of editorial playlists, each catering to a different mood or audience. How do you feel your music aligns with the specific vibes of the playlists you’ve been featured on?
I’m immensely grateful for my music’s inclusion in Spotify’s editorial playlists, and I have a deep appreciation for the diverse range of playlists that the platform offers. It’s been especially thrilling to see my tracks featured in playlists that align with both my cultural background and musical genre. As one of the few independent Asian artists transitioning from the East, I’ve gained significant exposure through various Asian-centric Spotify editorial playlists. Additionally, being spotlighted in playlists like “Ethereal” and “mood” perfectly complements my brand as an alternative R&B artist. These curated lists resonate with the essence and style of my music, making it a rewarding experience to connect with audiences who appreciate these unique vibes.
Your song “Rules” made waves by being featured on all Southeast Asian Spotify editorial playlists. What’s the backstory behind this track, and why do you think it resonated so strongly in that region?
‘Rules” serves as the centerpiece of my debut EP, “Gemini Moon,” a project that delves deeply into the dualities that have shaped my life. As a Chinese immigrant making the transition to life in America, I’ve grappled with the challenges of adapting to a new culture while also contending with the stereotypes and misunderstandings that often accompany this journey.
“Rules” encapsulates these complex emotions and experiences, resonating strongly with listeners who can identify with these cultural dynamics. Its particular resonance in the Southeast Asian region can be attributed to shared cultural elements and experiences that resonate with individuals there. The themes of identity, adaptation, and nuanced cultural experiences presented in “Rules” have struck a chord with audiences in this region. This track not only mirrors my personal journey but also speaks to a broader audience who can relate to similar experiences. Spotify’s recognition of this synergy has undoubtedly contributed to the track’s wide visibility across editorial playlists in Southeast Asia.
Tracks like “Pull My Hair” and “Headlights” have garnered significant attention. Could you share the inspiration behind these songs and why you believe they were spotlighted by Spotify’s editorial teams?
“‘Headlights” marked a significant turning point in my musical journey, representing my first venture into traditional R&B. With its catchy, ethereal, and groovy sound, the track easily resonated with mainstream R&B listeners. The accompanying music video for “Headlights” also garnered positive attention, further boosting its presence across multiple Spotify editorial playlists.
In contrast, “Pull My Hair” is a unique and intensely personal song. Created through a collaborative process involving several individuals, this track delves deep into the themes of depression and anxiety—important aspects of my own mental health journey. The song’s composition and lyrics aim to capture the emotional rollercoaster often associated with these conditions.
I believe both tracks caught the attention of Spotify’s editorial teams for distinct yet impactful reasons: “Headlights” appealed to a broad R&B audience with its accessible sound, while “Pull My Hair” touched on a deeply relatable topic, offering a unique angle on mental health that resonated with many.
Being on these editorial playlists exposes your music to a diverse range of listeners. Have you noticed any unique interactions or responses from fans who’ve discovered your music through these playlists?
Indeed, being featured on these editorial playlists has introduced my music to a wonderfully diverse audience. It’s been uplifting to see the unique interactions and responses from fans who have discovered my work through these curated lists. I’ve found that many of my listeners are genuine music aficionados.
While mainstream pop certainly has its merits, my fans tend to be drawn to the indie scene where my music resides. What’s truly special are the direct interactions I’ve had on platforms like Instagram, where people share how profoundly my songs have resonated with their own experiences. It’s incredibly heartwarming to know that my music has found a home in the hearts of those who connect with the stories I tell. This reinforces my belief in the transformative power of music to touch and comfort those who seek it.
Being consistently featured suggests that you’ve caught the attention of industry tastemakers. Have there been any surprising or pivotal moments or collaborations that have come about as a result?
Consistently being featured on Spotify’s playlists has certainly ushered in some transformative moments in my career, one of the most remarkable being my encounter with my current manager. Our partnership was initiated when he discovered my music on the “+852 Rising” playlist, which caters to Hong Kong and Chinese artists. At that time, my debut song “Relapse” was prominently featured.
His initial outreach was the catalyst for a collaborative relationship that has since evolved into a full-time management partnership. The influence he’s had on my career has been nothing short of extraordinary, guiding it in a positive and transformative direction. This experience serves as a testament to the incredible opportunities that can unfold when your music garners the attention of industry insiders.
With the growing influence of playlists in today’s music scene, do you ever find yourself crafting music with a specific playlist or vibe in mind?
Not particularly. My music-making process is primarily driven by emotion and feeling, rather than catering to a specific playlist or vibe. As an artist, I value the diversity and authenticity of my work, which often results in songs that may not adhere to a consistent theme or vibe. While tailoring music to fit specific playlists can be a strategic approach, I place more emphasis on the artistic integrity of the music itself. I believe in creating art out of sheer love and passion, allowing the creative process to unfold organically and authentically.
How has being featured on Spotify’s editorial playlists impacted your career trajectory and overall visibility in the music industry?
This exposure opened doors to A&R representatives and industry managers who took notice of my work. Additionally, it led me to connect with fellow artists in Los Angeles who have also received playlist placements. Through these connections, I’ve found my niche and a supportive community of artists. This network has been instrumental in my journey both in LA and in the broader music industry.
